Sonic 

What does it mean? 

Can you think of synonyms and antonyms? 

What word class does it belong to: adjectives, verbs, nouns or adverbs? 

How many syllables does the word have? 

Can you include it in a sentence? Remember capital letters and punctuation. 

Reading

Sun Safety 

Read the text all about keeping safe in the sun! Answer the questions. It might be helpful to underline key words in the questions to remind you of what to look for. Once you have completed the questions, see if you can spot any skills in the text such as adjectives and conjunctions. How many different skills can you find? 

Maths

Multiply and Divide by 9 

Practice counting forwards and backwards in 9s. We have practiced the 9 times table just before the Christmas break. Can you quiz yourself on the 9 times tables?   

Have a go at the White Rose worksheet. Remember, multiplication is commutative. This means that you can swap the factors around and the product will still be the same. 

GPS

Work through the SPaG Activity 2 questions. There are some tips to help you. Be sure to read them. If you have log-in details for Lexia and Spellzone, spend 5 or 10 minutes working through them.

Writing

We are going to begin looking at our core text for this term. It is a biography. Can you remember the features of this genre of writing from last term? Write them down and then check your ideas against the Biography Features found in Learning Resources. Did you get them all? Ella's story begins in Yonkers, New York. Can you find it on a map? Perhaps you can visit Yonkers using Google Earth:. 

You are making inferences about how Ella lived, using the Picture Prompt (in Learning Resources) to help you. When we make inferences, we use clues in a text or picture to help us improve our understanding/gain more meaning. Use the picture and the questions below as a warm-up. Then read the Lesson Plan to find out more.

Science 

This term we are answering the question, ‘Can you be touched by sound?’  

Sound is our main focus this term so we need to understand how sound is made and how it travels! There is a PowerPoint which explains how sound is made but here is a useful link too.

Your task: view this video and see if you can create an instrument like the lady. All you need is a can and an elastic band. Don’t forget to ask an adult first. Explore the different kind of sounds that can be made. What do you notice?  

Next, draw a picture which shows you hearing sound from your instrument (there is an example below). Using the knowledge you have learnt, write around your picture, explaining what is happening. Key vocabulary: sound waves, vibrate, object, particles.
