Hello Year 5 or 'Goedemorgen' as they say in the Netherlands.

Il faisait tres chaud hier avec un peu du vent. So, hopefully you enjoyed being outside too. Aren't the illustrations for 'The Egyptian Princess' stunning? Do you think they add to the text? Do you have any other favourite picture books? 'Where the Wild Things are' by Maurice Sendak and Anthony Browne's 'The Zoo' are some of our favourites. The illustrations tell a totally different story to the text and are beautifully drawn. They are worth a look. I am sure you have other recommendations too! 

As always, we will follow the normal routine that we would cover in school! 

 Word of the Day:  Pharaoh 

Look up what the word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always count!). 

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read your book for 15mins or more.

Go back over the 'Mummy!' poem. 

• Spend some time learning a couple of verses (or the whole piece!) thinking about how the poem will be performed. You'll work on this tomorrow too! We'd love to see some finished performances to put on the Year 5 Gallery (or even into the Museum!).

Consider the following questions when you're practising (remember, performing is more than just reading the text aloud!):

1. Expression: Do some of the words need to be read differently to others? How will you change your voice?
2. Volume: Are there any parts of the poem that need to be loud or quiet, shouted or whispered? 
3. Speed: Are there any parts which will be spoken faster or slower? 
4. Movements: Where will you include actions and what are you going to act out?  

09:30 - 10:30: Mathematics.

Today, tomorrow and into next week, we're going to do some booster learning on Fractions! :-) Use the Fractions Knowledge Organiser to help revise some of the concepts we cover in Year 5.  

Fractions: Add and Subtract Fractions! 

Work through 'Wednesday 3rd June - Maths Task Sheet'. See how you get on and just work through at a pace which helps to build your confidence :-)

10:30 - 10:45: Break/ Snack/ Exercise. 

Have a snack and try to get some fresh air if possible. 

Cricket: Practice your batting skills! You need a ball and a bat (this doesn't have to be a cricket bat, it could even be a tennis racket or even a large spoon! The ball could be a rolled up ball of scrap paper...) How many times can you bat the ball? Keep a record! What is your best score? 

10:45 - 11:15: SPaG. 

Spend 15mins on Lexia or Spellzone if you have an account - we want to hand out more certificates this term!!!

Look at the Flipchart PDF Grammar - More Relative Clauses! 

Look through the slides for Wednesady 3rd June - read the example text and work through the questions. Make notes on the information about relative clauses to help you remember! Then, have a go at re-writing the given sentences, adding in a relative clause somewhere. 

11:15 - 12:15: English/Writing.  Egyptian Cinderella! 

Imagine you are Rhodopis... Write a letter - on papyrus, of course! - back to your family telling them of your arrival in Egypt up to the point of your master giving you your dainty red slippers. 

1. Remember to address the letter correctly!
2. Ask how the person is? Explain why and how you suddenly disappeared. Describe how you arrived in Egypt, having been snatched from Greece to work as a slave! Remember, you have travelled miles overseas on a cramped boat, totally different to land!   
3. Explain and describe how you feel about being different to the others around you;
   1. Your views on your master...
   2. being with the other slaves...
   3. and how they react to you! 
4. Describe your master giving you the shoes! 
   1. Your reaction to the gift... 
   2. The other slaves' reaction to the gift. 
5. Finally, you need a concluding paragraph reflecting on your experience and thinking about what might happen next. 
6. Sign off your letter 'Your loving Rhodopis' or 'Your long lost daughter...' .

Don't forget to:

• Use the past tense! 
• Lots of feelings and emotions... (it is a personal letter after all and Rhodopis has been through a lot!). 
• Adverbial phrases (When I arrived... As I sat by the pool... When I saw my master...)
• Relative clauses (who, which, whose, that... 'I didn't feel seasick though, which is surprising as I had never once stepped foot on a boat before!). 
• Subordinate clauses (if, although, even though... Although the slaves were cruel, I knew deep down it was because they didn't understand me...). 

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch/Exercise. 

Try to get some fresh air if it is safe and appropriate to do so.

1:15- 1.30: Quiet Reading Time:

Listen to Chapter 4 of the 'Time Travelling Cat'. A mysterious tale that will take you back to Ancient Egypt. Click on our remote audio book page. We will be using this book later on in the term. 

1:30 - 2:45: Enquiry Focus: PSHE. 

This term we will be examining people who are important to us and our relationships with them. 

Complete the Special Relationship Sheet in the learning resources! 

2:45 - 3:00: Philosophical Question.

Spend some time during dinner or at some point in the evening, discussing this with the other people at home! We're sure there will be some interesting responses. 

Mrs. Hudson: I think you can judging by lots of the children where I live, all you need is a paddling pool. It is wonderful to visit new places though. It can really inspire you. 

Miss Martin: I think you can have a holiday at home! If you just relaxed, pottered about the house, drove to a few interesting places in the local area or explored places near you... Sometimes we can't always go away somewhere further afield or abroad, having 'down-time' at home is important!
