Hello Year 5! *virtual hand shake - with a nose bump (like they do in Qatar, Yemen, Oman and the United Arab Emirates)*

We hope you had a lovely Tuesday and managed to have some fresh air, despite the rain. It will do our green spaces lots of good though. When it rains, I think the new leaves look translucent and such a vivid shade of green. So have a look and see if you agree!

Listed below is our suggested timetable for the day. Remember, you can adapt and edit the times you do these tasks to suit the timetable you have at home :-).

As mentioned before, we have aimed to choose activities which can be completed straight into books without printing - to help save ink - but if you feel printing would be helpful, that is entirely up to you! :-)

 Word of the Day:  Stubby

Like you would in school, look up what this word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always apply!).

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read your book for 15 mins or more.

Have a go at the Comprehension Activity '25 Years of the Internet'. You choose whether you have a go at the 'Mild (Expert)' or 'Spicy (Brainbox)' level.

You'll continue working on this tomorrow too, so please don't worry about completing it all today!

09:30 - 10:30: Maths.

Today we're continuing our work on decimals again. Rather than adding decimals with different numbers, we're going to be subtracting them!

Warm-Up: Look at the Maths - Starter sheet and give it a go!

Click on the link below and find the video!

Home Learning - Year 5 - Summer Term - Week 2 (Lesson 4 - Subtracting decimals with different...) Start the video after Flashback 4

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/

Watch the video & then work through the different questions on the Maths - White Rose Sheet

  • If you're finding the worded problems a challenge & would like to practice more fluency, answer some questions from the Maths - Fluency Sheet (Column B).

Use the answer sheet to mark your work. Remember, we always self-mark our work in school and use this as an opportunity to reflect on where you need to improve.

10:30 - 10:45: Break.

Have a snack and try to get some fresh air if possible.

Practice your throwing skills. Roll up a scrap piece of paper. Start on a line. How far can you throw it? Keep a chart everyday.

10:45 - 11:15: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar.

Spend 15mins on Lexia or Spellzone if you have an account - how great if we could hand out more certificates?!

Look at Flipchart PDF Grammar - Commas to avoid ambiguity. Look through the slides for 'Wednesday 29th April'. Read the example text and work through the questions.

  • When do we use commas in sentences, to ensure the sentence makes sense?
  • Then, have a go at drawing the 2 different sentences and show how the meaning changes.

11:15 - 12:15: English.

In Chapter 5, the sign appears 'Land For Sale'. It is a very boring, simplistic advert.

  • How would you sell this plot of Land if you were an Estate Agent? Remember, you want to sell it! The people interested, are those who would only like to appreciate the amazing wildlife the Wilderness has to offer, so really give details of the wonderful natural habitat!

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch.

Be sure to have something to eat and try to get some fresh air!

1:15 - 1:30: Quiet Reading.

Go on to the Wilderness War section of the website. Listen to Chapter 3 as Miss Martin reads it.

1:30 - 3:00: Forest School:

We are going to give you some tasks to do. You can start these today and carry these on over the next few weeks. We do appreciate the some people may not have their own garden, but hopefully these can be completed during your exercise hour or from your home.

  1. Keep a cloud diary! Watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAqeFSa60TE. Use the Cloud Spotter Sheet in the learning resources.
  2. Grow something from a seed or the end of a vegetable! Cut off the top of a carrot or leek. Put it in a jam jar of water on the window sill. Alternatively, grow something from a seed - a tomato, cucumber, apple or lemon? Get some soil from outside. Put this in a yoghurt pot or similar. Put holes in the bottom for drainage and put on a saucer. Place your seed inside and water. Keep the soil moist, but don't over water! Be patient and see what happens.
  3. Create your own mini Forest School! Get some twigs, leaves, bits of bark etc. to create a space for some bugs. Egg boxes are great too! Use some water. See what happens every week. Lift your twigs, bark etc and see, have you encouraged more creatures?
  4. Watch the Wildlife videos on the Wilderness Watch page! Could you make your own video or wildlife photo? Maybe take a picture on a walk, in your garden or out of your window!

Well done everyone! We are continuing with the philosophical questions! They are just some funny little thoughts to get your brains working and everyone interacting (save your points for lunchtime or dinnertime or FaceTime - get your family involved!).

It will be interesting to hear what you think! :)

Here we go:

Do slugs deserve to eat? Do your parents agree? Why or why not?

Yesterday's question:

In what ways are children better than adults?

Mrs. Hudson: Certainly I think you lovely children see more joy in the world, giggling all the time, which is great, having fun with your friends, whilst as an adult, although we like to have fun, we may seem a bit more serious. However, I don't think that makes us better or worse.

Miss. Martin: I think children have incredible imaginations and are incredibly resilient (in ways they may not realise yet!). I think adults could learn a lot from children... I know so many people who wanted to grow up fast & now desperately want to be a child again because seeing the world as one big adventure is so awesome!

Have a great evening, Year 5! We look forward to seeing any ideas or work that you produced from today!

Log in on Thursday for some more exciting learning!
