Hello Year 5 or 'Здравейте' as they say in Bulgaria!

We hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather this week! We can guess how many of you are cooling down in the afternoons, so we hope you are having fun? Are you getting better at using a protractor? Don't worry if not, as there is more practice later.

Today, we are starting our special lessons for our Financial and Economic Well-being Week. There is a really interesting video to watch about Fairtrade Footballs, with Frankie Yu, showing us some amazing football tricks, as well as informing us about life in Bangledesh. You also have a chance to tidy up your family's food cupboard. 

Today's book recommendation comes from William Velvick, who has written his own recommendation for 

'H.I.V.E.' by Mark Walden. 

If you like Artemis Fowl, then H.I.V.E. is just for you. A thirteen year boy called Otto Malpense has been invited to a school in the middle of nowhere. But there is a slight catch. He can not leave until he has finished. Otto doesn't like the idea of that, so he decides to try to escape. 

If like us you are intrigued to see what Otto has to finish and how he escapes this unusual school, then keep a note of this book, ready for when the library opens. 

 Word of the Day:  Enterprise 

Look up what the word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always count!). 

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read for 15mins OR read to the end of the next chapter. 

Look at the Pyramid Pie from yesterday. 

• Brainstorm words to do with pyramids! 
• Can you create your own Pyramid Pie poem? Starting with 1 syllable and goes up by 1 syllable every time. Write about the wonderful monuments from Ancient Egypt! We would love to see these! 

09:30 - 10:30: Mathematics.

Drawing Lines and Angles Accurately! 

Remember, this week is Finance Week! So, to warm-up, have a go at the money activity at the beginning of the task sheet. 

Work through Wednesday 24th June - Maths Task Sheet. We're looking at accurately drawing our own angles with a protractor! 

10:30 - 10:45: Break/ Snack/ Exercise. 

Have a snack and try to get some fresh air if possible. 

Cricket: Catching!

Now, you have perfected your bowling technique, could you bowl to someone and get them to hit it back to you? Can you catch the ball? 

10:45 - 11:15: SPaG. 

Look at Grammar Flipchart - Possessives. 

Look through the slides for Wednesday 24th June - read the example text and remind yourself about how apostrophes are used in possessives. Watch this YouTube video which shows you the trick to working with apostrophes!

11:15 - 12:15: English/Writing.  Tutankhamum's Artefacts 

Look at the artifacts which helped Egyptologists find out about Tutankhamun. 

• Match the pictures to the descriptions. 
• Brainstorm powerful adjectives to describe how they look in detail! 
• Choose 3 artifacts and create your own exciting descriptions about them. 
  • Use similes, personification, relative clauses and subordinate clauses... 

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch/Exercise. 

Try to get some fresh air if it is safe and appropriate to do so.

1:15- 1.30: Quiet Reading Time:

Listen to Chapter 19 of the Time Travelling Cat. A mysterious tale that will take you back to Ancient Egypt. Click on our remote audio book page. We will be using this book later on in the term. 

1:30 - 2:45: Enquiry: P.S.H.E - Financial and Economic Well-being! 

Watch the Fairtrade Football video (there are some awesome football skills on it that you could try too!) which is a good reminder about being an ethical consumer and Fairtrade products.

• Go through your food cupboard (tidy it for everyone at home as you go). Find any foods with the Fairtrade symbol on. 
  • Make a list of these foods and ​​​​​​​where they come from. 
  • Can you locate these places in an atlas, world map or Google Earth. 

2:45 - 3:00: Philosophical Question. 

Today's Question: Should everyone get tips if they have done a good job?

Spend some time during dinner or at some point in the evening, discussing this with the other people at home! We're sure there will be some interesting responses.

Yesterday's Q: Do we really need to pay tax?  

Mrs. Hudson: This is an interesting question to discuss with your parents and grandparents, as lots of people have different opinions on it. More importantly, it is the law to pay tax. About a third of my wages go on Tax and National Insurance (another form of tax- find out the difference). This is not the same for everyone. I know that my tax goes to pay for hospitals, schools, refuse collectors, police, in fact so many services, that we have been appreciating during lockdown. So I definitely think we need to pay taxes,  but we need to make sure our taxes are used effectively, which is why we all need to hold our politicians, Borough and Parish councillors to account.

Miss Martin: Paying tax is the law and it is to help fund and resource so many essential and important infrastructures in our country, like hospitals, schools and the police etc. Without this payment, these services would struggle to supply the services we need them to!
