Hello Year 5 or 'Hej' as they say in Denmark!

How are your fractions coming on? do you feel more confident with these? What did you find out about the Hajj? Was your Egyptian God or Goddess able to help you with your school work, tidying or making the world a better place. We hope you had fun drawing and designing them.

If you have been watching the news recently, apart from Covid-19, you will have noticed the "Black Lives Matter" campaign and the furore over statues around the country. Today, for reading you will listening to a famous poem, written by Percy Bysshe Shelley over 200 years ago. It is amazing how relevant it is to today, We hope you enjoy it.   

 Word of the Day:  Torso 

Look up what the word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always count!). 

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read your book for 15mins or more.

Egypt is littered with ancient statues or monuments. Why do you think people build statues or monuments?

It is meant to refer to Rameses II. What can you find out about him? 

09:30 - 10:30: Mathematics.

To warm-up, spend 10 minutes on TT Rockstars and keep practising your times tables! 

Today, we're looking at Fractions as Operators (sounds fancy but it's finding patterns within skills you already know!).

10:30 - 10:45: Break/ Snack/ Exercise.

10:45 - 11:15: SPaG. 

Look at Grammar Flipchart - Sentence Adverbs.

Look through the slides for Wednesday 17th June - Look through the example text and remind yourselves about what adverbs are and why they are used (remember: how, where and when!). Have a go at looking at the different adverbs and decide whether they are telling you how, where or when something is being done! 

Remember to have a go at Lexia/ Spellzone! 

11:15 - 12:15: English/Writing. 

Mummification! This was an important part of the The Egyptian Afterlife Ceremony, which you will find out more about tomorrow! 

1. Log in to the website http://primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk/egypt/mummies.htm
   1. Read the information but click on: Prepare a Mummy (a fun, interactive online game!).
   2. Have a go at preparing your own mummy by clicking on the boxes below the body. 
2. Look at the instructions for Mummification, which are in the wrong order! Put them in the correct order! You can re-number them or if you have printed them out, stick them in the correct order. 
3. Now, write your own instructions for mummification. These will include a lot more detail, so:
   1. Write an introduction. Include: Who/ what were mummies, what mummification is and where this happened. 
   2. Create your own instructions. You could use the ones you have ordered already to help with ideas, but make them more interesting using the ideas below! Include:
      1. Numbers.
      2. Time connectives. 
      3. Adjectives.
      4. Relative clauses OR subordinate clauses. 
   3. To finish it off, add a conclusion! 'So now you know how to...' , 'At last you have created...' OR 'Congratulations! You now...' 
4. Check it all through! Does it flow the way you wanted it to? Do you have all your punctuation? Are your paragraphs clearly laid out? Could you 'up-level' your vocabulary to make it EVEN better?

Listen to Chapter 14 of the Time Travelling Cat. A mysterious tale that will take you back to Ancient Egypt. Click on our remote audio book page. We will be using this book later on in the term. 

1:30 - 2:45: Enquiry: History - Mummification! (Let's see what unfolds...) 

How is your mummified orange or tomato coming along? 

This afternoon, you are going to create your own sarcophagus and mummy! 

• You may not have all of the materials, but you could use scrap paper and tape, instead of foil and fabric! Try using tissues instead of fabric too! 
• Cereal, or any thin card, is perfect for the actual sarcophagus. 
• Decorate how you want using pens, pencils or paints!

Today's Question: Is something always funny because you laugh at it? 

Spend some time during dinner or at some point in the evening, discussing this with the other people at home! We're sure there will be some interesting responses.

Yesterday's Q: Is something always funny because you laugh at it? 

Mrs. Hudson: No, definitely not. I am afraid that sometimes I have a physical reaction to something bad that happens (eg: if my husband trips, my son played a few wrong notes on the cornet, or my daughter walked in to a lamppost!), where I laugh. I do laugh when these things happen to me too- well, sometimes, but not when I crashed a motorbike in Vietnam (no one was hurt thank goodness, although my family giggled!) This has got me in to lots of embarrassing situations, so I do feel bad for reacting like this!

Miss Martin: All of the things we laugh, definitely aren't all funny! I think I sometimes laugh as a 'knee-jerk' reaction to something I find uncomfortable or awkward... (which can be perceived as rude so I try really hard to make sure I just keep quiet!)... I think I laugh because otherwise I would cry - there's no winning! But sometimes people laugh when something definitely isn't funny... we need to be respectful!
