Hello Year 5 or 'diga' as they say in Bolivian!

We bet your Times Tables are coming on brilliantly with all the practice from working out the volumes of 3D shapes. If we asked you to work out the volume of a cuboid, how would you do it?

Did you find out about Bastille Day, which is a big national holiday in France? The Eiffel Tower is lit up in the colour of the French tricolour- red, white and blue. Fireworks blast overhead! This year, there will still be fireworks, but the military parade will be pared back along the Champs Elysees. However, I am sure the French will find ways to celebrate at a distance, just as we did during VE day!  

Word of the Day:  Coordination 

Look up what the word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always count!). 

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read for 15mins or to the end of the next chapter in your book.

Listen to the Night Train again, thinking carefully about the rhythm. 

• Can you create your own rhythmic poem about Lockdown, being with your family, being at school normally? Use lots of sounds and repetition! 

09:30 - 10:30: Mathematics. We're looking at a new area of Measurement - Comparing Volume!

Have a go at the warm-up! Work through Wednesday 15th July - Maths Work Sheet. Find the volume of the shapes and then compare them! 

10:30 - 10:45: Break/ Snack/ Exercise. 

Sports Day Practice: Plan a sports afternoon for your family! You will need 4-5 activities. This could be skipping, an obstacle course, or beat the goalie! How will you score them? What refreshments will you offer? Will you have a rest station?

10:45 - 11:15: SPaG: 

The Missing Emojis SPaG Problem-Solving Game! 

Read through the given instructions and have a go at each SPaG task! Each one will provide you with a clue as to who the suspect is! 

Work through this in today's and tomorrow's SPaG learning! 

Remember, try some Lexia/Spellzone too!  

11:15 - 12:15: English/Writing.  Writing your Time-Travelling: Problem!  

Use your plan to write your Problem paragraph. 

This can be the trickiest part, as it needs to be really exciting and you need to think extremely carefully about how you are going to get out of it. 

The Egyptian Phrase Mat may help you! 

So, what is your problem? Are you trapped somewhere sinister? Have you been kidnapped or imprisoned by a vicious pharaoh? 

• How can you make this your best piece of writing? Become an author by drafting and re-drafting!
  • Show a variety of sentences - long and short for impact! Use relative AND subordinate clauses. 
  • Use different openers, such as adverbs of time or connectives! 
  • Show off all the vocabulary you have learnt about Egypt! Add in similes or metaphors. Could you add alliteration or personification? 
  • Check through for any missing punctuation, including commas and inverted commas! 

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch/Exercise. 

Try to get some fresh air if it is safe and appropriate to do so.

1:15- 1.30: Quiet Reading Time.

We have now finished all our audio reading texts. So please use this time to read your own book or information books about Ancient Egypt.  

1:30 - 2:45: Enquiry:  Transition Activity! (Part 1).

Write a letter to your new Year 6 teacher(s), telling them about yourselves! You only need to write to your teacher, not both class teachers in the year group. 

So: 5AM write to Mrs Pullin & Mrs Kempe, 5AH write to Mrs O'Brien! 

• What do you enjoy doing in school?
• What do you enjoy doing out of school in your free time?
• How are you feeling about going into Year 6?
• What do you want to achieve in your learning next year? 

It would be lovely to send them into school so that Mrs Pullin & Mrs Kempe or Mrs O'Brien can have a read and get to know you! 

2:45 - 3:00: Philosophical Question. 

Today's Question: Give a positive, negative and an interesting fact about football.

Spend some time during dinner or at some point in the evening, discussing this with the other people at home! We're sure there will be some interesting responses.

Yesterday's Q: What is the point of the Olympics?  

Mrs. Hudson: Even though the Olympics costs the host country a great deal of money, it is a fantastic way for that country to showcase it's hospitality and tourist attractions. London was amazing during the 2012 Olympics. Most importantly it brings the world's community together in a huge tournament of sport. The five intertwining rings symbolise this. Who doesn't love cheering on their country too? 

Miss Martin: I think it's a great opportunity for lots of different countries around the world to show off the amazing skill, talent and sportsmanship that their nations hold! It's a huge celebration on all accounts and is, really, a worldwide tradition now every 4 years! I think it would be amazing to go and see it live one day... tickets are very hard to get!
