Hello Year 5! *virtual hand shake - with some jumping up and down (like the Adamu tribe do in Kenya)

Bonjour tout le monde. Comment ca va? Did you giggle at the lovely Everton Players French music video? We did. Some of you may have noticed a very fluffy ginger cat enjoying The Wilderness War too. His name is Humphrey and like Miss Martin's dog Bou, he likes getting in on the action. Humphrey sends you a meow and Bou sends you all a big woof. Enjoy Forest School today too.

Listed below is our suggested timetable for the day. Remember, you can adapt and edit the times you do these tasks to suit the timetable you have at home :-).

As mentioned before, we have aimed to choose activities which can be completed straight into books without printing - to help save ink - but if you feel printing would be helpful, that is entirely up to you! :-)

 Word of the Day:  Biodiversity

Like you would in school, look up what this word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always apply!).

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read your book for 15 mins or to the end of the next chapter.

The poem 'Natural Green' is by Benjamin Zephaniah.

Visit the website: https://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/poetry/outloud/zephaniah_turkeys.shtml

  • Here, you will hear Benjamin Zephaniah read his famous poem: 'Talking Turkeys'.
  • Which poem do you like best, 'Natural Green' or 'Talking Turkeys'? Why?
  • What other poems can you find that are written by Benjamin Zephaniah?

09:30 - 10:30: Maths.

Warm-Up:  Complete the Daily 10 Challenge. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

Level 5 → Multiplication → Mixed Tables: Up to x12.

Today, we're going to continue finding the area of compound shapes.

Read through 'Wednesday 13th May - Maths Task Sheet' to see what you're challenges you have been set!

Don't forget to check out the extra challenge at the bottom of the task sheet if you feel like your brain needs stretching! It's one from the NRich Website this time...

10:30 - 10:45: Break.

Running: How fast can you run? In your garden or hall, see how many lengths of the space you can run in 5 minutes. Can you do more every day? Keep a log!

10:45 - 11:15: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar.

Spend 15mins on Lexia or Spellzone if you have an account - how great if we could hand out more certificates?!

Look at the Flipchart PDF Grammar - Verbs with SuffixesIn the example text, see how different suffixes can change different adjectives and nouns into verbs. Look at the suffixes -ify, -ate and -ise. Choose the correct word with the appropriate suffix to finish the sentence!

11:15 - 12:15: English.

Watch the two videos below:

Write some arguments for building on The Wilderness and arguments against building on The Wilderness.

  • Use the letter Noah wrote to help you come up with some ideas for saving The Wilderness. You can use/adapt ideas from the videos too.
  • EXTRA CHALLENGE: Look back through your Words of the Day... which can you fit in to your work today?

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch.

Be sure to have something to eat and try to get some fresh air!

1:15 - 1:30: Quiet Reading.

Go on to the Wilderness War section of the website. Listen to Chapter 14 and 15 as Mrs Hudson reads it. Have you spotted Humphrey her cat yet?

1:30 - 3:00: Forest School Activities!

  1. Keep a cloud diary! Watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAqeFSa60TE. Use the Cloud Spotter Sheet in the learning resources.
  2. Grow something from a seed or the end of a vegetable! Cut off the top of a carrot or leek. Put it in a jam jar of water on the window sill. Alternatively, grow something from a seed - a tomato, cucumber, apple or lemon? Get some soil from outside. Put this in a yoghurt pot or similar. Put holes in the bottom for drainage and put on a saucer. Place your seed inside and water. Keep the soil moist, but don't over water! Be patient and see what happens.
  3. Create your own mini Forest School! Get some twigs, leaves, bits of bark etc. to create a space for some bugs. Egg boxes are great too! Use some water. See what happens every week. Lift your twigs, bark etc and see, have you encouraged more creatures?
  4. Watch the Wildlife videos on the Wilderness Watch page! Could you make your own video or wildlife photo? Maybe take a picture on a walk, in your garden or out of your window!
  5. Look at Mrs. Holmes Forest School activities on the main page.

Well done everyone! We are continuing with the philosophical questions! They are just some funny little thoughts to get your brains working and everyone interacting (save your points for lunchtime or dinnertime or FaceTime - get your family involved!).

It will be interesting to hear what you think! :)

Here we go:

What is so great about the world anyway? Do your parents agree? Why or why not?

Yesterday's question: Can you think yourself happy?

Mrs. Hudson: It was wonderful when we did our Positive Mental Health week at school, to see the range of activities that everyone thought of to improve their mental health, making them happier: dancing, yoga, colouring, drawing, Forest School and gardening. My mum has always encouraged me to think how lucky I am, which is true. So if I am feeling a bit fed up, I think about my lovely family, friends, Humphrey, the cat, the countryside, Sussex Road.

Miss. Martin: This is something that I'm working on more at the moment... in the times where I haven't felt myself, I've always tried to find something to do which keeps my mind busy or makes me feel better! Mindfulness colouring is something I've kept up with since we started in class, 5AM, and I love going for walks. After I've done something like that, I start to feel more positive! I also try to think of the wonderful things and people I do have in my life...

Have a great evening, Year 5! We look forward to seeing any ideas or work that you produced from today!

Log in on Thursday for some more exciting learning!
