Hello Year 5 or 'ni hao' as they say in China.

Salut tout le monde. En Mai Il fait tres beau et chaud.  C'etait merveilleux. We hope you had the chance to enjoy the sunnier weather yesterday. I am sure that if you are growing things in your garden, you are appreciating the rain though.

How are your fractions coming on? Are you remembering more? What about your information book? Did you know that the Ancient Egyptians actually invented the lever. Some of you explored this with your shadufs, which was a vital machine to help farmers keep their crops watered from the irrigation channels along the Nile. This is ingenious considering that most of Egypt is desert! Anyway, don't forget we are love to see any work you have done, which you can send via the school office. 

As always, we will follow the normal routine that we would cover in school! 

 Word of the Day:  Inscription 

Look up what the word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always count!). 

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read your book for 15mins or more, OR read to the end of the next chapter. 

Read the parody poem of 'If' about being in a classroom. 

• Which lines do you like best? Why? 
• Which poem do you prefer? Why? 

09:30 - 10:30: Mathematics.

We're continuing with fractions again today. You're all doing so well - keep it up! 

Today's we're focusing on Multiplying unit and non-unit fractions by integers! (Sounds a tad complicated but actually is far more straightforward than you may first think!). 

• Work through 'Wednesday 10th June - Maths Task Sheet'. There is a board game to play, to start with and then you have a choice of sheet to work through. 

10:30 - 10:45: Break/ Snack/ Exercise. 

Have a snack and try to get some fresh air if possible. 

Cricket: How accurately can you throw a ball? Using a ball (or rolled up scrap paper) make 3 targets. These could be with tubs, bowls or chalk circles. You could give each target points. So the further away it is, the more points you get! 

How many points can you score?

10:45 - 11:15: SPaG.

Look at Grammar Flipchart - Standard English: Adverbs. 

Look through the slides for Wednesday 10th June. Start by trying one of the spelling challenges. Then, read through the example text, looking at how adjectives have been used instead of adverbs. Work through the given questions.  

Remember to have a go at Lexia/ Spellzone! 

11:15 - 12:15: English/Writing. Creating an information page! 

How will you do this? Think back to the pages you created about the British Wildlife. How will you set your page out to make it really eye-catching and easy for people to find the information? 

Remember the key features: 

• A title - could it be a question? 'How did the Egyptians dress?' OR 'What were their daily lives like?' 
• Subheadings, which will signpost what the paragraph(s) will be about. 'Entertainment and Past-times'... 
• Technical/historical vocabulary. Shaduf, cartocuhe, sarcophagus etc.
• Relative clauses The Nile, which was vital for the Ancient Egyptians and their farming, would flood every year. 
• Subordinate clause. Although the Ancient Egyptians lived mostly surrounded by desert, they created inventions which allowed them to collect water from the Nile more easily. 
• Fronted adverbials. Several months later, the soil is saturated with the water from the Nile. 
• Pictures with captions. Think carefully about what images will help your reader understand.,  
• Check your punctuation.     .  ,  !  ?  ( ) - ; :  

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch/Exercise. 

Try to get some fresh air if it is safe and appropriate to do so.

1:15- 1.30: Quiet Reading Time:

Listen to Chapters 9 and 10 of the Time Travelling Cat. A mysterious tale that will take you back to Ancient Egypt. Click on our remote audio book page. We will be using this book later on in the term. 

1:30 - 2:45: Enquiry Focus: PSHE - Special People.

Read the sheet about special people and fill in the scenario sheet. 

Create a card or letter to send to a special person to tell them why they are important to you. 

2:45 - 3:00: Philosophical Question. 

Today's Question: What's the point of football?

Spend some time during dinner or at some point in the evening, discussing this with the other people at home! We're sure there will be some interesting conversations. 

Yesterday's Q: What would be your absolute perfect day?

Mrs. Hudson: Isn't it interesting that when you start thinking about this you have one immediate thought and then change your mind and adapt it. My immediate thought was a day at a warm beach, probably in France, laughing in the waves with my children and husband. Then having a lovely dinner of seafood. I kept thinking about this and my mind kept twisting and turning. I thought about Art galleries, the countryside, cycling, my friends, dancing- so many to choose from. The common factor would be lovely people, a lovely place, lovely food and giggling. That's all I need.  

My husband has just made me laugh, saying that his perfect day would be: His whole family would go with him to watch Scotland win the World Cup! Wouldn't we be lucky? Today's question could be controversial in our house!!!

Miss Martin: Hmmm... this is hard! There are so many things I would love to do... But, it would be waking up early and having a delicious breakfast (preferably with a view of the ocean!). Then, meeting up with friends to go out for the day to somewhere new, like a theme park or an adventure somewhere new! Coming back home to a BBQ and chatting, laughing around a fire pit outside in the sunshine! Or doing that on a beach... it's the people I'm with who make the difference! And throw in some pancakes in there somewhere, I love pancakes.
