Hello Year 5 or  Сайн байна у  (sain baina uu) as they say in Mongolia!

We hope you had a fabulous weekend! This week, we are moving our greetings to Asia! We are also going to be rounding off our Ancient Egyptian topic over the next two weeks, as you combine all your amazing knowledge about the topic and start to create your own Ancient Egyptian story. We can't wait to read these!

Today's book recommendation comes from: Ayla O'Brien! 'The Secret of the Night Train' by Sylvia Bishop!

"When Max is sent to Istanbul to stay with her boring Great Aunt-Elodie, little does she expect to be plunged into a thrilling night-time adventure across Europe. And when the mysterious Heartbreak Diamond goes missing, Max must find her feet in a whirling world of would-be diamond smugglers, thieves and undercover detectives."

Word of the Day:  Transition

Look up what the word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always count!).

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read for 15mins or to the end of the next chapter in your book.

Read the poem Dear Mrs. Butler by Allan Ahlberg. You may have read this before, but you could facetime a friend and practice saying a line each!

09:30 - 10:30: We are continuing with our Measurement topic this week!

Converting Units of Time!

Have a go at the warm-up, spending 10 minutes on recapping some of our work on angles!

Work through Tuesday 7th July - Maths Work Sheet. Spend some time working on... well.. time!laugh

10:30 - 10:45: Break/ Snack/ Exercise.

Sports Day Practice: Balancing a packet of crisps, sweeties or a book on your head.

Use one of these things and practice balancing them on your head. Try going in a straight line first. Go as far as you can without dropping the object.

10:45 - 11:15: SPaG. Revision!

Practise your new spellings for the week! Can you learn them in a new way?

Look at your New Spellings sheet!

11:15 - 12:15: English/Writing.  Writing a Newspaper Report!

Look at the example from The Story of Tutankhamun. Brainstorm what you need for the newspaper report!

Did you include:

  • A catchy headline?
  • A byline?
  • The introduction (including the 5W's OR 5 bottoms on a bench)?
  • The main event that happened...
  • Quotes and opinions from key witnesses?
  • A conclusion - summarising what happened and thinking to the future about what might happen next - treasures to go in the museum?

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch/Exercise.

Try to get some fresh air if it is safe and appropriate to do so.

1:15- 1.30: Quiet Reading Time: 'I was There'

Listen to Chapter 6 of I Was There. This book tells the story of the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb, by a boy who was the water carrier. So it gives you a different perspective on this.  Click on our remote audio book page. We will be using this book later on in the term.

1:30 - 2:45: Enquiry:

French: Listen to Charlse Trenet sing 'La Mer'. You could even join in now!

  • As you are listening, fill in the 2 sheets for French. Remember: in French they have masculine (le/un) and feminine (la/une). We don't have these in English.
  • What else can you find our about French painter Claude Monet?

RE: Today, you will look at summarising the learning you have looked at in RE and how this applies to you and your values in life. Work through RE Task Sheet - Lesson 11

2:45 - 3:00: Philosophical Question.

Today's Question: How can you feel music?

Spend some time during dinner or at some point in the evening, discussing this with the other people at home! We're sure there will be some interesting responses.

We look forward to hearing about your responses!

Yesterday's Q: What is the point of music?

Mrs. Hudson: Music is vital to our society. It can mean so much to different people. It can bring communities together with choirs. It can bring religions together with chants or hymns. it can change your mood, making you feel calm or joyful, even wanting to dance. This is without the fun and satisfaction of playing a musical instrument, which I know many of you do.

Miss Martin: There is a huge point to music! It's an incredibly art that can be accessed by people in so many different ways. You can read, write, listen to, play or record music in all it's glorious forms and genres! I would really struggle if music were to not be a part of my life now. It can affect my mood and definitely brings people together!

We look forward to hearing your responses! Log in on Wednesday for more wonderful learning! Have a great evening.
