Hello Year 5 or 'Hujambo' (Swahilil) as they say in Kenya!

How did your death masks turn out? Were they as beautiful as King Tutankhamun's, with the stunning blue lapis lazuli, the carnelian, obsidian, turquoise, glass and of course the dazzling gold? Or did you use other colours that you prefer? It is such an iconic image of the Boy King, and Egypt for that matter. 

Our new topic in French over the next few weeks is the beach, so if  you are a big fan of Mr. Bean, then I strongly recommend that you watch the video and listen to the song: La Mer by Charles Trenet. Have a go a painting a beach scene like Claude Monet too!  

Today's book recommendation comes from Andrew Champkin: 'The Nothing to See Here Hotel' by Steven Butler! 

Welcome to the Nothing to See Here Hotel! A hotel for magical creatures, where weird is normal for Frankie Banister and his parents who run the hotel! When a messenger arrives at the hotel, announcing the imminent arrival of the goblin prince Grogbah, Frankie and his family rush into action to get ready for their important guest. But it soon becomes obvious that the Banister family are going to have their work cut out with the demanding prince and his never-ending entourage, especially when it turns out the rude little prince is hiding a secret...  

Word of the Day:  Probe 

Look up what the word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always count!). 

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read and complete the Comprehension Activity comparing Howard Carter with Tutankhamun. 

09:30 - 10:30: Mathematics.

Reasoning about 3D Shapes! 

Have a go at the warm-up, revising our work on angles! Work through Tuesday 30th June - Maths Work Sheet. We recommend spending some time familiarising yourselves with different nets of shapes by building and manipulating them yourselves! This always helps! 

10:30 - 10:45: Break/ Snack/ Exercise. 

Have a snack and try to get some fresh air if possible. 

Sports Day Practice!  Get a spoon (make sure your adults know!). Wrap some scrap paper into a thick ball, with some tape! 

• Can you walk with one hand behind your back, whilst the other holds the egg (paper) and spoon out in front, down the garden or around every room in the house? 
• Can you try running? Don't drop the egg! 

10:45 - 11:15: SPaG. 

Practise your new spellings for the week. Can you learn them in a new way?

Look at your New Spellings sheet!  

Remember to have a go at Lexia/ Spellzone! 

11:15 - 12:15: English/Writing.  The Valley of the Kings! 

Most Egyptian Pharaohs were buried in the Valley of the Kings at Luxor, not in the Great Pyramids of Giza, which were prone to looting! 

Watch the brief clip of the Valley of the Kings today. Use the pictures of the Valley of the Kings too! 

• Brainstorm words to describe the landscape, which is mainly desert and has an extremely hot climate! For example: arid, vast, craggy stone, sandy rocks, as hot as coal! I am sure you can find more using a thesaurus or even discussing with your friends online! 
• Next, write a description of the area! 
  • Use your senses: What can you see, feel, hear, smell and taste? 

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch/Exercise. 

Try to get some fresh air if it is safe and appropriate to do so.

1:15- 1.30: Quiet Reading Time:  I was There

Listen to Chapter 1 of I was there. This book tells the story of the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb, by a boy who was the water carrier. So it gives you a different perspective on this.  Click on our remote audio book page. We will be using this book later on in the term. 

1:30 - 2:45: Enquiry: 

French: 'La Plage' (the beach!). Listen to this famous song by Charles Trent called 'La Mer'. It's bound to cheer anyone up!

• How many times does he sing'La Mer'. Keep a tally! 

Next, have a giggle at Monsieur Haricot or Mr. Bean in Monsieur Haricot en vacanes (Mr Bean on Holiday!).

Finally, look at the Claude Monet's famous seascapes. Use Google Translate to find out what the word means. Then, draw or paint your own sea scape and label the sand, sea, cliffs in French!

2:45 - 3:00: Philosophical Question. 

Today's Question: What is a positive, a negative and an interesting fact about living in Great Britain? 

Spend some time during dinner or at some point in the evening, discussing this with the other people at home! We're sure there will be some interesting responses.

Yesterday's Q: If you were an animal, which animal would you want to be and why? 

Mrs. Hudson: This is an easy one for me- a cat. Obviously I would want to live in a lovely cosy home, where I could have the opportunity to wander and be fed well. I would be able to jump exceptionally well, always landing on my feet and climb amazingly tricky obstacles. However, there is a down side- licking that fur and crunching small creatures! Eeewwwww!

Miss Martin: Oooo this is hard... I think I would be a lion.. as they sleep for about 20 hours of the day in the sunshine and are only active for the remaining few hours. I do like my naps so I think this would definitely be me!
