Hello Year 5 or 'Bonjour' as they say in France.

We hope you had a really good first day yesterday and are excited as we are about our new topic- What if I were a pharaoh for a day?  Have any members of your family ever visited Egypt? If so, ask them where they went or what their thoughts were about this amazing country. 

As always, we will follow the normal routine that we would cover in school! 

 Word of the Day: Natron 

Look up what the word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always count!). 

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read your book for 15mins or more.

Go over the attached poem 'Mummy!'. Familiarise yourselves again with the poem. 

• Choose which level sheet you'd like to work through from the Poetry Detective Pack! You will be exploring and unpicking how you feel about the poem. 

09:30 - 10:30: Mathematics.

This is another recap session - lucky you! Have a go at the questions on Position and Direction White Rose End of Block - Position and Direction Assessment. 

Let's see what you can remember from this unit of learning! 

• Try to complete the task without looking at your previous work... as best as you can! If you are struggling, however, take a sneak peek at your books to see what could help you with a question. 
• Once done, go through the answer sheet and self-mark. Where did you make mistakes? Why? 

10:30 - 10:45: Break/ Snack/ Exercise. 

Have a snack and try to get some fresh air if possible. 

Cricket: Practice your batting skills! You need a ball and a bat (this doesn't have to be a cricket bat, it could even be a tennis racket or even a large spoon! The ball could be a rolled up ball of scrap paper...) How many times can you bat the ball? Keep a record! What is your best score? 

10:45 - 11:15: SPaG. 

Practise your new spellings for the week! Can you learn them in a new way? 

Look at your New Spellings Sheet!  

Use the Visual Spelling Strategies document to help learn spellings in a new way! 

Remember to have a go at Lexia/ Spellzone! 

11:15 - 12:15: English/Writing.

Revisit the Egyptian Cinderella story, read by the author Shirley Climo. 

1. Use the sheet in the resources as guidance to compare The Egyptian Cinderella with the traditional tale. 
2. What do we learn about Ancient Egyptian life from the story? What clues does the text give us about this?

Listen to Chapters 1 - 3 of the Time Travelling Cat. A mysterious tale that will take you back to Ancient Egypt. Click on our remote audio book page. We will be using this book later on in the term.

Spend some time during dinner or at some point in the evening, discussing this with the other people at home! We're sure there will be some interesting responses. 

Mrs. Hudson: A white crayon is vital if you are drawing on black paper. 

Miss Martin: White crayons are really useful for blending and making other colour that you have used a little lighter! They also look great on black paper :-).
