Hello Year 5! *virtual hand shake - with a nose bump (like they do in Qatar, Yemen, Oman and the United Arab Emirates)*

We hope you had a lovely Monday and enjoyed getting back to work. You may have notice that our first webpage has changed, as we not only have Miss. Martin's brilliant videos of the Wilderness War, but our own webcam views of wildlife around Tonbridge. Take a peek at badgers and Hannah's gorgeous fox cubs playing.

Listed below is our suggested timetable for the day. Remember, you can adapt and edit the times you do these tasks to suit the timetable you have at home :-).

As mentioned before, we have aimed to choose activities which can be completed straight into books without printing - to help save ink - but if you feel printing would be helpful, that is entirely up to you! :-)

 Word of the Day:  silhouetted

Like you would in school, look up what this word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always apply!).

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read your book for 15 mins or more.

Choose a descriptive word from the text you are reading. Write it down. Then, use a thesaurus (or try to do it without and then check in a thesaurus afterwards!) to write down 5 synonyms and antonyms for the word you chose.

09:30 - 10:30: Maths.

Today, we're continuing with our work on decimals. Today, we're now going to explore adding decimals with a different number of decimals.

Warm-Up: Fill in the missing numbers in these multiplication and division calculations.

  • 476 x _________ = 4760.                   __________ ÷ 10 = 18.
  • 75 x ________ = 7500.                     23 ÷ ________ = 0.23.
  • 3.4 x ________ = 340.                      340 ÷ ________ = 0.34

Watch the video and then work through Maths - White Rose Work Sheet

Need an extra challenge? Have a go at Maths - Extra Challenge.

Use the answer sheet to check through your work!

10:30 - 10:45: Break.

Have a snack and try to get some fresh air if possible. How did you get on with the 2.6mile or 26 challenge?

Practice your throwing skills. Roll up a scrap piece of paper. Start on a line. How far can you throw it? Keep a chart everyday.

10:45 - 11:15: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar.

Spend 15mins on Lexia or Spellzone if you have an account - how great if we could hand out more certificates?!

Look at your new spellings for the week.

Use the 'Visual Spellings Strategies' document to help you learn them in a new way!

11:15 - 12:15: English.

Look at Chapter 1 and 2 of The Wilderness War. You will find these in our introductory webpage.

  • As you read through, write down and brainstorm any keywords that describes the Wilderness, using all the senses (sights, smells, sounds, feelings etc.).
  • Add in some of your own vocabulary too!
  • Now, write your own paragraph to describe the Wilderness. Remember to use your fantastic sentences, making sure you use a range of sentence openers (avoid using 'I...' and 'The..' over and over). For example: 'Underneath the canopy of leaves...' or 'Beneath the looming branches...'

Use the Descriptive Settings Word Mat and the Year 5 Writing Word Mat to help.

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch.

Be sure to have something to eat and try to get some fresh air!

1:15 - 1:30: Quiet Reading.

Go on to the Wilderness War section of the website. Follow Chapter 2 as Miss Martin reads it.

1:30 - 3:00: French: Look at the adjectives to describe the animals.

Match the English and French adjectives. Split your page in to 2 and then sort the adjectives into masculine and feminine. Complete the word search on the adjectives and animals.

  • Write simple sentences - Le chat est petit.   La souris est grande.      (est = is)

RE: Today, we're focusing on one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Shahada: Pillar One.

Look at RE - Lesson 2 TaskUse the The Story of Balil: The First Muezzin.

Well done everyone! We are continuing with the philosophical questions! They are just some funny little thoughts to get your brains working and everyone interacting (save your points for lunchtime or dinnertime or FaceTime - get your family involved!).

It will be interesting to hear what you think! :)

Here we go:

In what ways are children better than adults? Do your parents agree? Why or why not?

Yesterday's question:

Is a more emotional person, more or less likely to be a good person?

Mrs. Hudson: I think everyone can be emotional for lots of reasons. That doesn't make the person better or worse than anyone else.

Miss. Martin: Emotions come in all shapes, sizes and extremes. Anger and jealousy are emotions... If you feel those a lot of the time, you'd be 'emotional' but not necessarily in a positive way. I think it's how you act and behave when you feel those emotions which counts...

Have a great evening, Year 5! We look forward to seeing any ideas or work that you produced from today!

Log in on Wednesday for some more exciting learning!
