Tuesday 26th January 2021

Welcome to Week 4 of Remote learning! laugh

We hope you enjoyed the glorious, sparkling sunshine yesterday. It was a very spiky, sharp frost. Did you manage get some fresh air? How did you get on with the science? Today we are hoping to build on this as we look at more chemical reactions.

We're so impressed with the quality of work you are achieving - keep it up, Year 5 :-)

Keep uploading your work on Tapestry. We love to see it.

09:00 - 09:45: Class Daily Zoom Session!

It's been lovely to have so many of you join us for the calls so far. Make sure you have a paper and pen ready for the session, to make notes of key learning points and to be able to join in with the tasks :-).

Word of the Day:   Stimulant

Look up what the word means, what word group it belongs to and place it accurately into a sentence.

09:45 - 10:30   Mathematics.

Step 4: Multiply 2-digits (Area Model)    PART 2

Today, we’re continuing with our learning on multiplying, by looking at a method called the area model (or otherwise known as the Grid Method).

Work through the Tuesday 26th January’ – Maths Task.

It is really important to watch the White Rose video on the link - this will help with your new learning!

10:30 - 10:45   BREAK!

Get outside and enjoy the Winter air.

Can you create your own mini-fitness programme for outdoors?

Try star jumps, running on the spot or keepie-uppies?

10:45 - 11:15   SPaG

Practise your new spellings for the week. Can you learn them in a new way?

Look at your New Spellings sheet!

Remember, try some Lexia/Spellzone too!

11:15 - 12:15   English/Writing.

What did Gordy write in his diary about the break in?

Read through chapter 20 again. How do you think Gordy was feeling?  How would he describe it? Use your brainstorm of what he saw.

Write 2 diary entries imagining you are Gordy.

  1. Before he went downstairs

  2. The other when he saw the devastation and their precious laboratory looking like a crime scene.

Use the attached sheet to help.

12:15 - 12:30   Class/Own Book.

Like we would in class with our class book, spend some time quiet reading or listening to the class book. The teachers have uploaded videos of themselves reading different chapters on Tapestry, so be sure to check :-).

12:30 - 1:30   LUNCH!

1:30 - 2:00   Reading Activity.

This week we are focusing on newspaper reports. Read the article Up Close with Sharks.

Answer the questions in full sentences.

2 - 2.30pm    Science

For today’s lesson it would be great if you could try the mixtures with:

  • bicarbonate of soda,
  • lemon juice
  • vinegar,

so have those ready. Don’t worry about the iron fillings, you could just add a coin to see what happens. However, you could just look at the picture to help you. If the substance you have added changes or something, such as a fizzing happens, this is a chemical reaction.

Now complete the two activity sheets.

Philosophical Question to finish the day!

Yesterday's Q:  Would you rather be a cat or a dog? Why?

Miss Martin:  Hmmm... I think of my dog, Bou, and to be fair I do envy the lifestyle she leads... Fed twice a day... Lots of cuddles... Naps a lot of the day... Running through puddles, swimming and getting super muddy on walks.... That sounds pretty great to be fair. But, like Mrs Hudson said about cats, dogs will eat some very odd things (especially Bou, she's snacked on some very unappetising things before!), and I'm not sure I fancy that!

Miss Chapman:

Mrs. Hudson: This could be controversial. I think my class would guess that I would prefer to be a cat. Great at jumping, climbing fences and buildings and sneaking in places. They always seem to find a warm place to cuddle up in too, spending much of the day asleep. I must say though that I don't fancy eating birds and mice! Dogs are great too, but cats fascinate me.

Today's Question: Should Governments penalise people for unhealthy lifestyles?

Spend some time during dinner or at some point in the evening, discussing this with the other people at home! We're sure there will be some interesting responses :-)
