Hello Year 5! *virtual hand shake - with a smiley face!*

We hope you enjoyed yesterday's work. It is wonderful to hear how well you are getting on with your learning. Keep it up.

Listed below is our suggested timetable for the day. Remember, you can adapt and edit the times you do these tasks to suit the timetable you have at home :-).

As mentioned before, we have aimed to choose activities which can be completed straight into books without printing - to help save ink - but if you feel printing would be helpful, that is entirely up to you! :-)

 Word of the Day:  Patron

Like you would in school, look up what this word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always apply!).

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read your book for 15 mins or more.

For the rest of the session, write a list of questions you would ask the author of your book, if you had the opportunity to do so.  The questions could be something like: where did they get inspiration for their characters? Where did they get this storyline from? Did they have alternate ideas for endings?

09:30 - 10:30: Maths.

Today we are continuing with our work from yesterday (Complements to 1), using our knowledge of number bonds to 10, 100 and 1000 and applying these to decimals.

Warm-Up: Complete any of the missing sums you didn’t do yesterday. If you have done them all, get someone at home to come up with some for you to complete.

  • Remember to line up place value columns & don’t forget place holders!

Click on the below and find the video!

Home Learning – Year 5 – Summer Term Week 1 (Lesson 3 – Complements to 1). Start the video from 2.58. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/

Watch the video and work through remaining Questions 4 – 7 on the sheet started yesterday.

If you feel this work may be too challenging and you want to continue boosting your confidence following the questions from yesterday, work through Fluency - Complements to 1!

10:30 - 10:45: Break.

Have a snack and try to get some fresh air if possible.

How is your running jump going?

Like last week, put a line (a piece of string, ribbon etc) on the floor, as your starting point. Make sure there is nothing in the way and you can run or take 3 steps back easily. How far can you jump? Remember to use your arms to power forward too. Measure 3 jumps. Keep a record for the week. Can you get further?

10:45 - 11:15: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar.

Spend 15mins on Lexia or Spellzone if you have an account - how great if we could hand out more certificates?!

Look at the spellings for ‘Week 25: Mixture of Yr3-4 and Yr5-6’

Use the Visual Spelling Strategies document to help learn spellings in a new way!

11:15 - 12:15: English.

Look at how the Bats text is set out. Is this a fiction or non-fiction text?

Choose 3-5 indigenous British animals to research. There are some resources to help you if you don’t have access to a tablet/ computer.

Website: Woodlands Trust – Animals…https://wildwoodtrust.org/animals/?gclid=Cj0KCQjw4dr0BRCxARIsAKUNjWShCZYA5bCjv5nFvFb7sdA6BQm3g_2shCRGoLcu5DtN_DtmuiWdzx0aAj6mEALw_wcB

Go on 'Animals' to find out more.  You could also use other websites or books to help research too.

Today you are going to create notes on the 3-5 animals you have chosen. Think about writing down questions or subheadings to order your notes. Then write keywords for each section. You are going to use this work to create your own British Indigenous Species Book on Thursday and Friday.

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch.

Be sure to have something to eat and try to get some fresh air!

1:15 - 1:30: Quiet Reading.

Like we do in class with our Class Book, take a moment to do some quiet reading to yourself.

1:30 - 3:00: RE & French Focus:

RE: What helps you through the journey of life? What helps Muslims through the journey of life?

Warm-Up: For Muslims, on the 23rd, the month of Ramadan begins! Take a look at this video before you get started and take a moment to learn about this special time of the year for Muslims.

Main Task: Look at the document Lesson 1 - Five Pillars of Islam and use the PowerPoint Slides resource to help with the second task!

French: Pets! (Week 1)

Use the learning resource sheets for French - week 1. Look at the words for key animals in French.

  1. Match the English and French words. You could use a google translate or a french dictionary to help.
  2. Draw a line through the middle of your page. One side is masculine (un or le) and the other is feminine (une or la).
  3. Now put the animal words in to each group.
  4. Finally practice these French animal words with the Word search.

Well done everyone! We are continuing with the philosophical questions! They are just some funny little thoughts to get your brains working and everyone interacting (save your points for lunchtime or dinnertime or FaceTime - get your family involved!).

It will be interesting to hear what you think! :)

Here we go:

Could you have a sport where everyone is one the same side?  Do your parents agree? Why or why not?

Yesterday's discussion point:

If you could make a new law, what would it be?

Mrs. Hudson: That everyone should be kind and courteous to each other. Also that the land we have is protected, as once it is built upon we have lost it forever. My husband said: Ban sugar, which is ironic as he eats the most chocolate! I don't he's thought that one through.

Miss Martin: That everybody tries to achieve an act of kindness everyday! Especially in times like now, you realise just how much the small things matter & that our wellbeing/ looking out for one another is incredibly important... I think we forget that sometimes (being only human!). I also thought about incorporating 'naptime' into the school day... hehe!

Remember tomorrow is World Earth Day 2020, so have a look at the activities on the first page of the website for the whole school and choose 2-3 to complete. If you plan this now, you won't need to use the computer tomorrow, thereby saving electricity and the planet (woo!) Have a great evening, Year 5! We look forward to some of your creations tomorrow. enlightened

Log in on Thursday for some more exciting learning!
