Hello Year 5! *virtual hand shake from a virtually social distance of 2m*

How did you get on with starting our Good Citizenship Week? Remember  to look at the list of ideas below. If you forgot yesterday, then you could always do two today? I am sure you will enjoy making the people around you smile.

Word of the Day:  Racism

Like you would in school, look up what this word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always apply!).

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read your book for 15 mins or more.

Our poem of the week is 'The Caged Bird' by Maya Angelou.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjr-LVpU0hk

Listen to the video above and read the sheet at the same time.

  • Do you like the poem? Why or why not?
  • What does it make you think of? Write down a few lines, sharing your thoughts.

09:30 - 10:30: Maths.

Today, we're continuing with Position and Direction, but specifically looking at reflection!

Work through 'Tuesday 19th May - Maths Task Sheet'. Remember to watch the YouTube video on the task sheet to help you!

Work through the different activities where you have to reflect the shapes in the mirror lines successfully.

Remember to count away from the mirror line, so that the drawing is accurate and always use a ruler to help!

10:30 - 10:45: Break.

Create your own obstacle course. Could you have sections with all the skills we have been practising, such as running, jumping, skipping, throwing? Time yourself. Can you get faster? Compare your time against your friend’s or a family member.

10:45 - 11:15: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar.

Spend 15mins on Lexia or Spellzone if you have an account - how great if we could hand out more certificates? Remember to do a little every day!

Practice your New Spellings for this week!

11:15 - 12:15: English.

Imagine you are Noah and his friends, playing in the Wilderness. Create a play script of the scene, imagining their conversation of when they found out that the Wilderness is going to be sold!

  1. Describe the setting.
  2. Decide on the characters (Remember to use adverbs in brackets to describe how they are talking!).
  3. Remember, each character needs to speak on a NEW LINE, followed by a colon
  4. Imagine their conversation. How will you show how they feel by the speech and what's being said?
  5. Check your spelling and punctuation! Use the Writing Mat to help you!
  6. Act it out with a family member!

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch.

Be sure to have something to eat and try to get some fresh air!

1:15 - 1:30: Quiet Reading.

Go on to the Wilderness War section of the website. Listen to Chapter 23, 24 and 25 as Miss Martin and Mrs. Hudson read.

Head on over to the NEW page where the videos are now kept!

Children's Tab (at the top of the Sussex Road page) → Remote Learning Books and Audio.

Provide the login details you were emailed & then find the Year 5 page! yes

1:30 - 3:00: French:

Watch 'Not now Farley!' to practice the different types of weather in French.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zj6w2hv

  • Write down the key phrases that they mention in the video.

Keep a French weather diary! Write Quel temps fait il? at the top.

  • Write Lundi, Mardi, Mercredi, Jeudi, Vendredi, Samedi and Dimanche down the side. Draw a picture of the weather and write: 'Il fait du soleil' (if it's sunny) at the top.
  • Try the challenge sheet, looking at whole sentences, describing what people might do on each day of the week, depending on the weather. Use a dictionary or Google translate to help you work out the phrases.

RE: Comparing prayer between Muslims and Christians.

Work through RE Task Sheet. Look through the provided resources for Muslim and Christian prayer. Note down facts/research about both in the provided column.

  • What comparisons can you see?
  • What is the same across both religions?

Well done everyone! We are continuing with the philosophical questions! They are just some funny little thoughts to get your brains working and everyone interacting (save your points for lunchtime or dinnertime or FaceTime - get your family involved!).

It will be interesting to hear what you think! :)

Here we go:

Does the colour of a person's skin make any difference?

Yesterday's question: What do you most miss at the moment?

Mrs. Hudson: I most miss seeing people face to face. I love talking to you all, but it's not the same as helping you face to face. It has been great when I have seen some of you. I really miss hugging my mum and friends. Don't worry 5AH I won't start hugging and kissing you when I see you!!! Actually that would be impossible at a distance of 2m apart. Phew, I hear you say!

Miss. Martin: I miss being able to meet up with friends and family... and seeing 5AM of course! Although it's been great to see people virtually (I'm a Zoom Quiz Master now!) but it's just not the same as being able to BBQ in the sun with your friends or go out to your favourite place to eat with family or explore somewhere new (I always like jumping on a train and finding new, quirky places in London!). And, nothing compares to teaching you lovely pupils face to face, nothing at all!

Have a great evening, Year 5! We look forward to seeing any ideas or work that you produced from today!

Log in on Wednesday for some more exciting learning!
