                                                                                 Good Citizen Week

This week, Sussex Road is going to have a Good Citizen Week. We have seen so many acts of kindness during lockdown  in the news, on television and across social media.. Clapping for the NHS and carers, donating and fund raising are just some examples that come to mind. We are sure you can think of many more.

Your challenge is to show kindness each day, either to family members in your household or towards people in the wider community. We have included some ideas to get you started:  say hello to your neighbour, write a letter, make a drink for your family. However, kindness comes in many ways so please feel free to think of your own. Being kind is guaranteed to make you smile and will cheer everyone up. As a good citizen, just make sure you maintain a social distance of 2 metres.

Philosophical question:

Today's question: What would you do if you had a ring of invisibility?

Word of the day: aghast

Challenges:

  • Find out what it means and write the definition in your own words!

  •  What is its word class?

  • How many syllables does it have (clap each syllable to help you)?

  •  Make a list of synonyms and antonyms

  •  Can you use it in an interesting sentence?

  • Are you able to use it, appropriately, when you are speaking or in any of your writing opportunities?

English

Brilliant – you have an idea of what your introduction will look like! Today we need to address what your arguments are which support your opinion!

Today is all about gathering evidence! So why should Alfie go to the dentist?

We need 3 key arguments as to why he should go to the dentist. Let’s flick back to what we know about Alfie and his teeth:

  • Likes fizzy drinks

  • Eats sugary foods

  • Missing lots of teeth

  • Has serious tooth ache

  • The teeth he has a brown/yellow

What would happen to his teeth if he doesn’t go to the dentist?

I would like you to write down as many reasons as possible as to why he should go to the dentist and then pick the top 3 reasons which you can then use in your letter. To do this you may need to think back to what you have learnt so far about teeth!

Here are some example reasons you could organise:

He will lose all his teeth

The teeth he has left will turn black

Toothache will worsen and develop into something more

His gums will become inflamed

His teeth will start to decay and get holes in them

Bad breath

Can you match the reasons to what we know of Alfie from reading the book?

Can you use any of the following features in your planning?

Groups of three – when three adjectives or phrases are used together to make them stand out.

Repetition – words or phrases that are repeated so that they stick in the reader’s mind.

Superlatives – words that show that something is the best or the most

Emotive language – when words are used to make the reader reel a certain emotion I.e. sadness

Exaggeration – when information is given that is over the top, or slightly untrue

Rhetorical questions – using questions that don’t need an answer to get the reader to think

You have looked at the health benefits of a balanced diet for your body. We are going to put this learning into practice in the next couple of days. You are going to design, prepare and cook (or assemble) your own healthy dish.  This first lesson is very much about your planning. Read the Lesson Plan and then work through the powerpoint step-by-step.
