Hello Year 5 or 'Hallo' as they say in Norway!

We hope you enjoyed finding out about some of the Ancient Egyptian Gods. Can you see any similarities between the Mayans and the Ancient Egyptians? If so, hold those thoughts this week, ready for next week...

Today we have a television recommendation for you  from Ayla O'Brien. On 18th June on BBC 4, Tutankhamun In Colour, will transport you to the time that the Boy King's tomb was discovered. We will be examining this later on next week.

 Word of the Day:  Guardian

Look up what the word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always count!).

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read your book for 15mins or more.

Take some time to think about any books you have read recently, which you think would be worth sharing with and recommending to your classmates!

  • Make a note of it somewhere so that when you next speak to your teacher, you are able to share it with them!

09:30 - 10:30: Mathematics.

We're continuing with our learning around finding fractions of amounts! Was it more straightforward than you expected it to be?

Work through 'Tuesday 16th June - Maths Task Sheet'.

10:30 - 10:45: Break/ Snack/ Exercise.

Have a snack and try to get some fresh air if possible.

Cricket: Bowling! Watch the video below to perfect your bowling technique:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvxfr7SXIB0

  • What are the 3 tips you need to remember to bowl a ball in cricket? Have a go!

10:45 - 11:15: SPaG.

Practise your new spellings for the week! Can you learn them in a new way?

Look at your New Spellings Sheet

Use the Visual Spelling Strategies document to help learn spellings in a different way!

Remember to have a go at Lexia/ Spellzone!

11:15 - 12:15: English/Writing.

Using the information that you found out from yesterday about the Egyptian Gods, draw your own Egyptian God or Goddess!

  • Google or research some Ancient Egyptian symbols to help you! Could you include one of these on your God or Goddess?
  • What is it the God or Goddess of? What does it stand for/ represent? (Football, health, the environment, pets, friends? etc!)
  • Write a paragraph describing what it looks like! (Is it entirely human or is it part animal? What do these parts represent too?).
  • Write another paragraph describing its job. What does it protect or make better? Why?

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch/Exercise.

Try to get some fresh air if it is safe and appropriate to do so.

1:15- 1.30: Quiet Reading Time:

Listen to Chapter 13 of the Time Travelling Cat. A mysterious tale that will take you back to Ancient Egypt. Click on our remote audio book page. We will be using this book later on in the term.

1:30 - 2:45: Enquiry (RE and French!).

French:

Read the poem 'Le Retour de Printemps'.

  • Look up any new words using a French dictionary or Goggle translate.
  • Try to make your own poem! Look at the example in the resources. Just change the key words using the French Animal Word Mat

RE:

Today, you will look at the importance of Hajj (a Muslim's journey of pilgrimage). Work through the tasks given on the sheet RE - Lesson 8Use the PowerPoint to help you learn some more about pilgrimage and what it involves.

2:45 - 3:00: Philosophical Question.

Today's Question: Is something always funny because you laugh at it?

Spend some time during dinner or at some point in the evening, discussing this with the other people at home! We're sure there will be some interesting responses.

We look forward to hearing about your responses!

Yesterday's Q: What is a positive (a good thing), a minus (a bad thing) and an interesting point about a chocolate tea-pot?

Mrs. Hudson: I am not sure my family would be able to think of anything bad about any object made of chocolate! So apart from the taste, I can only really think of the negatives that my family would eat it and I would be without anything to make my tea in. Also, more importantly, my tea wouldn't taste nice- yuck! I love chocolate too, but tea and chocolate?! No way! Did you know that it takes 400 beans to make one pound or 0.453 kg of chocolate?

Miss Martin: A chocolate teapot would be a short-lived luxury I imagine because...

1) I'd be too tempted to eat it... as 5AM know, I'm a chocolate fiend!

2) Wouldn't the chocolate melt if you put boiling water in it?... surely making it a wet, gloopy mess!

Speaking of chocolate though, 70% of the world's cocoa originates from West Africa!

We look forward to hearing your responses! Log in on Wednesday for more wonderful learning! Have a great  evening.
