Hello Year 5 or 'Xin chào' as they say in Vietnam!

We hope you are excited about creating your own time - travelling story! Were your characters inspired by your friends or characters you know from other stories you are familiar with?

Today we are looking at the object that will help us time travel, converting measures and drawing a mystical scarab beetle. Have fun! laugh

Today's book recommendation comes from: Maria Fraser! 'Podkin One Ear' by Kieron Larwood

It is about three rabbits called, Pook, Paz and Podkin. Their mum has died and they have to battle against evil, metal rabbits- The Gorm. This is a must for rabbit lovers!

Word of the Day:  Menstrual Cycle

Look up what the word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always count!).

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read for 15mins or to the end of the next chapter in your book.

How was your version of the 'Dear Mrs. Butler' poem? Can you find any other poems by Alan Alhberg?

09:30 - 10:30: Mathematics.

Timetables (Continuing from yesterday!)

Continue to work through Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th July - Maths Work SheetYou will have the two lessons to work on the tasks, so take your time & don't rush!

10:30 - 10:45: Break/ Snack/ Exercise.

Sports Day Practice: Balancing a packet of crisps, sweeties or a book on your head.

Use one of these things and practice balancing them on your head. Try going in a straight line first. Go as far as you can without dropping the object.

10:45 - 11:15: SPaG.

Look at the Flipchart PDF Grammar - Conditional Sentences.

Look through the slides for Thursday 9th July - Warm-up your brain with some questions about subordinate clauses and conditional sentences.

  • Work through the Grammar Sheet.
  • Get someone at home to help you with dictation!

11:15 - 12:15: English/Writing. The Time-Travelling Cat: Describe an Object!

In the Time-Travelling Cat, Topher travels back in time because of the souvenir cat, Ka, his mum has given him. In your story, you are going to travel back in time to the Ancient Egyptians, but you will need a special object/souvenir to trigger it!

  • Look at the English Sheet - which one of these objects will you choose? The scarab beetle, souvenir pyramid or the cat?
  • What will happen to show that you have gone back in time? Will the cat's eyes light up? The hieroglyphics glimmer as it takes you time travelling? Maybe, the scarab beetle's wings will shimmer and flap! You decide...
  • Once you have chosen your object, brainstorm ideas to describe it! Keep thinking about similes, the intricate patterns and designs, the shapes... How does it make you feel when you hold it?

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch/Exercise.

Try to get some fresh air if it is safe and appropriate to do so.

1:15- 1.30: Quiet Reading Time: 'I was There'

Listen to Chapter 8 of I Was There. This book tells the story of the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb, by a boy who was the water carrier. So it gives you a different perspective on this.  Click on our remote audio book page. We will be using this book later on in the term.

1:30 - 2:45: Enquiry: Art!   Scarab beetles!

How to draw a scarab beetle: Look at the link below!

Follow this website on how to draw a scarab beetle. What can you find out about these? Why are they so important to the Ancient Egyptians?

2:45 - 3:00: Philosophical Question.

Today's Question: What is the point of the Arts (literature, art, music, dance)?

Spend some time during dinner or at some point in the evening, discussing this with the other people at home! We're sure there will be some interesting responses.

We look forward to hearing about your responses!

Yesterday's Q: Which song sums you up? It could be the music or the lyrics.

Mrs. Hudson: This again is a challenging question. Well, this will make some of you chuckle as some of my friends would say: Dancing Queen. How embarrassing, Mrs. Hudson dancing! Anyway, I think, "Don't Stop Me Now, " by Queen. The lyrics, "Don't stop me now, I'm having such a good time...." really sum how I feel when I hear this tune. It is very upbeat, so great to dance, sing-a-long to and make me appreciate how lucky I am.

Miss Martin: This is hard... I have so many songs which I really love! Whenever we had our 'Friday Raves' 5AM, I would always start it off with 'MK-17'... the beat and rhythm always get me grooving, rather than any particular connection to the lyrics. My all-time favourite (and my friends say whenever they listen to this, it's what they connect with me!) is 'Clarity-Zedd'. I can't NOT get up and get grooving! Sing my heart out to that too...

We look forward to hearing your responses! Log in on Friday for more wonderful learning! Have a great evening.
