French

Exercise plays a very important role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. One of the main ways we get this exercise is by playing sports. What sports do you like? What sports would you like to try that you haven't done before? Today, we are focusing on how to say I play and I do in French.

je joue = I play

In French, we say je joue (I play) when talking about ball games. For example:

je joue a le football                je joue a le cricket           je joue a le tennis          je joue a le basket

In the English language, there are ways to shorten words e.g. contractions (I would = I'd). Similarly, there are ways to shorten some parts of French language. In the above examples, 'a le' can be shortened to 'au'. Now we say:

je joue au football                  je joue au cricket             je joue au tennis           je joure au basket

Je fais = I do

In French, we say je fais (I do) when talking about other sports. For example:

je fais de le velo                     je fais de le skate             je fais de la danse          je fais de la natation

Again, some of these phrases (but not all of them) can be shortened. In the above examples, 'de le' can be shortened to 'du'. Now we say:

je fais du velo                         je fais du skate           

de la does not shorten so stays the same.
