Hello Year 5! *virtual hand shake - with a deep and majestic bow (like they sometimes do in Cambodia, India, Nepal etc.)*

We hope you had a lovely Wednesday and enjoyed doing some Forest School activities. Although, we have had lovely weather a lot recently, it was great to see some sunshine return in the morning.

Listed below is our suggested timetable for the day. Remember, you can adapt and edit the times you do these tasks to suit the timetable you have at home :-).

As mentioned before, we have aimed to choose activities which can be completed straight into books without printing - to help save ink - but if you feel printing would be helpful, that is entirely up to you! :-)

 Word of the Day:   Stealth
Like you would in school, look up what this word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always apply!).

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read your book for 15 mins or more.

Finish off the Comprehension Activity '25 Years of the Internet'

09:30 - 10:30: Maths.

Today and tomorrow, we're going to apply what we have learnt in the videos to help answer some addition AND subtraction questions involving whole numbers AND decimals.

Read through Maths Task Sheet - Thursday and Friday

There is no video with today's learning, however you can use some of the key teaching points from the previous videos if you need to, to help you complete the learning.

10:30 - 10:45: Break.

Have a snack and try to get some fresh air if possible.

Practice your throwing skills. Roll up a scrap piece of paper. Start on a line. How far can you throw it? Keep a chart everyday.

10:45 - 11:15: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar.

Spend 15mins on Lexia or Spellzone if you have an account - how great if we could hand out more certificates?!

Look back at Flipchart PDF Grammar - Commas to avoid ambiguity. Look through the slides for 'Thursday 30th April'. Look at the sentences in the warm-up and reason why you have placed those commas in those particular places.

  • Work through the Grammar Sheet.
  • Get someone at home to help you with some dictation.

11:15 - 12:15: English.

Read through Chapters 3 and 4 of 'The Wilderness War' in the learning resources below.

Who are the children in the wilderness? - Zeke, Noah, Natalie, Toby and Hollie, Anil and Asha. Look closely at where they live in the Pear Tree Buildings.

  • Create a map and mini fact-file about each character. You will have to use your inference skills (finding clues in the text and deducing information from them!).
  • Think about how they behave towards each other, especially in the Wilderness.
  • Do their dens give us any clues about them? Who are related? Are some of them better friends than others? Are some of them better at inventing games or plans than others?

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch.

Be sure to have something to eat and try to get some fresh air!

1:15 - 1:30: Quiet Reading.

Go on to the Wilderness War section of the website. Listen to Chapter 4 as Miss Martin reads it.

1:30 - 3:00: Science - Focused Enquiry:

Describe the differences in the life-cycles of a bird.

Look at the videos to find out about the life-cycle of a bird. Label your diagram. You should be experts by now! https://www.birdspot.co.uk/identifying-birds/the-life-cycle-of-a-bird

Extend your vocabulary in your diagram by using: egg, hatchling, fledgling, juvenile, subadult and adult.

Well done everyone! We are continuing with the philosophical questions! They are just some funny little thoughts to get your brains working and everyone interacting (save your points for lunchtime or dinnertime or FaceTime - get your family involved!).

It will be interesting to hear what you think! :)

Here we go:

Would you rather be a plane or a bird? Do your parents agree? Why or why not?

Yesterday's question:

Do slugs deserve to eat?

Mrs. Hudson: This is a well-timed question, but you may not like my answer! I left out some bean seedlings on Monday night. On Tuesday morning, eight of my plants had been munched on by slugs!!! So I bought the plants in, stopping the slugs from snacking on my pride and joy. At present, I know we need every kind of creature, but I am trying not to feed slugs.

Miss. Martin: Now, weird or not, slugs creep me out a little. Everything has its place on Earth, but last winter, slugs had managed to find cracks in the outer wall by our living room and slimed their way in... For several mornings, we came down to find their trails over the sofa! Of course, they do deserve to eat... but not in our kitchen! I'd rather they ate alfresco and remained outdoors!

Have a great evening, Year 5! We look forward to seeing any ideas or work that you produced from today!

Log in on Friday for some more exciting learning!
