Hello Year 5 or 'Muli bwanji' as they say in Malawi!

Well, today we will have our class Zoom calls at 4.30pm! Will we recognise you? New haircuts. No haircuts? Have you grown with all this lovely food, exercise and sunshine? Have your brains got bigger, with all the super work you have done?! We are super excited to see you.

So, you have gone down the steps into the tomb! Today, we are going to find out what is there and what happens next. 

What did you think of Lord Carnarvon? Howard Carter and him are totally wrapped up in the Tutankhamun discovery, but

for different reasons. Listen to the audio book 'I Was There', to get a different perspective on the dig too.

It is about an hour long, but a great way to spend time if it is raining today. Also, you could split it in to sections. Enjoy!

Word of the Day:  Seals (not the animals) 

Look up what the word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always count!). 

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read The Voice from the Pharaoh's Tomb by Patricia Leighton! 

1. How does the Pharaoh feel about being in his tomb? Use words from the text to help you! 
2. Why were the Gods like thieves?
3. Which jewels were in the treasure trove?
4. In verse 4 and 5, which words were used to show that the Pharaoh is feeling claustrophobic in this coffin? 
5. How have the cats changed?

09:30 - 10:30: Mathematics. 

We're moving onto our Measurement Topic and getting straight to it!

Starting with Metric Units... 

Work through Thursday 2nd July - Maths Work Sheet. We recommend spending some time familiarising yourselves with the different conversions and how to convert between the different measures! 

10:30 - 10:45: Break/ Snack/ Exercise. 

Have a snack and try to get some fresh air if possible. 

Sports Day Practice!  Get a spoon (make sure your adults know!). Wrap some scrap paper into a thick ball, with some tape! 

• Can you walk with one hand behind your back, whilst the other holds the egg (paper) and spoon out in front, down the garden or around every room in the house? 
• Can you try running? Don't drop the egg! 

10:45 - 11:15: SPaG.

Look through the slides for Thursday 2nd July - Continue with the word class activity from yesterday to warm-up..

• Work through the Grammar Sheet. 
• Get someone at home to help you with dictation!

11:15 - 12:15: English/Writing.  Describing the Treasure!

Watch the video from yesterday if you need to! Today, we will be focusing on the amazing treasure that Howard Carter found in the tomb! 

• Think of 10 words to describe the gold! You could use a thesaurus or a dictionary to help you! 

Next, look at the PowerPoint - Journey into the Tomb! with the amazing artifacts that King Tut was buried with. Brainstorm more words to describe these! 

• How would you feel when you saw these objects for the first time, after you have been searching for years? 

Now, imagine you are Howard Carter finding the treasure. Write a detailed account of what you saw. 

• Are you sure what everything is? Could you describe its shape or colour? Were they that easy to see? 

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch/Exercise. 

Try to get some fresh air if it is safe and appropriate to do so.

1:15- 1.30: Quiet Reading Time: I was There

Listen to Chapter 3 of I Was There. This book tells the story of the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb, by a boy who was the water carrier. So it gives you a different perspective on this.  Click on our remote audio book page. We will be using this book later on in the term. 

1:30 - 2:45: Enquiry: History!  The Curse of the Tomb!  

You have probably heard about the Curse of the Tomb! Now, you are going to investigate it further. 

• Read the PowerPoint and look at the information page from our book on the curse!  
• What do you think? Create a poster showing all the details about the curse, then add what you think! 

2:45 - 3:00: Philosophical Question. 

Today's Question: Do you think robots will eventually take over the world? Why or why not? 

Spend some time during dinner or at some point in the evening, discussing this with the other people at home! We're sure there will be some interesting responses.

Yesterday's Q: Are miracles possible?   

Mrs. Hudson: It is a lovely thought that miracles do exist. I am not convinced, but I do think that surprising things happen that can be a force for good. It would be wonderful to think they do, but I suppose it is just another way in which life and the world is so amazing. 

Miss Martin:  I really, really hope miracles do exist! I'd like to think there's some alternative universal power out there which might have some magical way of letting things turn out... But then, I also know life doesn't always work out that way. Who knows!
