Hello Year 5! *virtual hand shake - with a foot tap!*

We hope you jumped right in to World Earth yesterday and enjoyed doing some different activities! We loved hearing about what you got up to and would love to see some pictures of the creations you made!

Listed below is our suggested timetable for the day. Remember, you can adapt and edit the times you do these tasks to suit the timetable you have at home :-). 

As mentioned before, we have aimed to choose activities which can be completed straight into books without printing - to help save ink - but if you feel printing would be helpful, that is entirely up to you! :-)

 Word of the Day:  Saint  

Like you would in school, look up what this word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always apply!). 

09:00 - 09:30: Reading. 

Read your book for 15 mins or more.  

Create a review of your book so far, or a book you may have finished recently. What is/was it about? Who are the key characters and what are they like? Where was the story set? What type of book is it? 

Would you recommend it to a friend? Why or why not? Rating out of 5? 

09:30 - 10:30: Maths. 

Today we are continuing with our work on decimals but moving progressing onto some addition and looking at what we need to do when we cross the next whole number.

Home Learning – Year 5 – Summer Term Week 1 (Lesson 4 – Adding decimals - Crossing the Whole). Start the video from 0.25.

Watch the video and work through the Maths - White Rose Main Task.  

You'll be looking at how to cross the whole using different methods. 

• Finished the sheet and fancy a challenge? Look at Maths - Challenge! Spot the mistake - solve the sum and reason yourself clearly (like what we do in class!) 

10:30 - 10:45: Break. 

Have a snack and try to get some fresh air if possible.

10:45 - 11:15: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar. 

Spend 15mins on Lexia or Spellzone if you have an account - how great if we could hand out more certificates?!   

Look at 'Grammar Flipchart Slides - Commas within Sentences'. Look at the slides for Thursday 23rd April. After you've completed the tasks on the slides, complete Grammar - Commas within Sentences.  

Get somebody at home to help you with the dictation task! 

11:15 - 12:15: English. 

Create your own non-fiction book on indigenous animal from Great Britain. You can create a page for each of the animals. So complete 2-3 today and 1-2 tomorrow. In total you will have 3-5 pages. 

Remember to add: a title, subheadings, paragraphs, pictures and captions. 

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch. 

Be sure to have something to eat and try to get some fresh air! 

1:15 - 1:30: Quiet Reading. 

Like we do in class with our Class Book, take a moment to do some quiet reading to yourself. 

1:30 - 3:00: St George's Day Activities! 

Take a moment to imagine St George... a dragon-fighting, damsel-in-distress-saving hero may come to mind! But what else do people know about the day? Well apparently, only 1 in 5 of us know that St George's Day falls on April 23rd each year, and a quarter didn't even know that he's the patron saint of England?! 

Task 1: Look at the painting 'St George and the Dragon' by Paolo Uccello (1470) which is currently in the National Gallery.  

• Do you like it? Why or why not? Think about the subject of the painting, what colours have been used? What about the form of the painting? 
• Do you think the artwork is realistic? Do you think Paolo Uccello painted what he actually saw or from his imagination? 

Task 2: Listen to the poem: 'Not my Best Side' by UA Fanthrope. 

• Does this give a different view of the picture compared to your initial ideas? Why or why not? 

Task 3: Draw, paint or create with plasticine your own St George and the Dragon scene.

• Could you make it more modern with a Pop Art or Frida Kahlo element? 
• Could you create some writing to go with it? Maybe a script or description? 

Well done everyone! We are continuing with the philosophical questions! They are just some funny little thoughts to get your brains working and everyone interacting (save your points for lunchtime or dinnertime or FaceTime - get your family involved!).
