Thursday 21st January 2021

Good morning, Year 5!

How did you find your writing of your Potion conclusions yesterday? Did you manage to sneak in some parenthesis, either using commas or dashes? How are you feeling about your multiplication? Remember, your key 12x12 table facts can help you with this - you just apply them to bigger sums!

Keep uploading your work on Tapestry. We love to see it.

09:00 - 09:45: Class Daily Zoom Session!

It's been lovely to have so many of you join us for the calls so far. Make sure you have a paper and pen ready for the session, to make notes of key learning points and to be able to join in with the tasks :-).

Word of the Day:  Substance

Look up what the word means, what word group it belongs to and place it accurately into a sentence.

09:45 - 10:30   Mathematics.

Step 3: Multiply 4-digits by 1-digit

Today, we're continuing with our new learning in Multiplication and Division.

Work through Thursday 21st January - Maths Activity.

It is really important to watch the White Rose video on the link - this will help with your new learning!

10:30 - 10:45   BREAK!

Get outside and enjoy the Winter air.

Skipping in the perfect exercise to get your heart beat racing and to practise your resilience as you try different moves and tricks.

10:45 - 11:15   SPaG

SPaG – Flipchart PDF - Parenthesis: Commas and Dashes!

Look through the slides for Thursday 21st January - look at the given sentences in the Brain Warm - Up. Work through the sheet 'Parenthesis: Commas and Dashes'.

Get somebody in the family to help you with some dictation. Have them read the sentences to you.

Remember, try some Lexia/Spellzone too!

11:15 - 12:15   English/Writing.

Your Final Advert?

Use a whole page and write your advert out neatly! You could present it as a double page spread if you wanted (be sure to plan this out in pencil first!).

Look at the sheet from Monday again to help you think about your layout. How could you make key points stand out?

Include:

  • A catchy title and maybe a slogan.
  • Your introduction.
  • The instructions on how to make the potion with time connectives, imperative verbs and adverbs!
  • Your conclusion.
  • Pictures or diagrams with captions.

As you are writing your draft, think about how you could make it even better and improve it. Be proud of your work!

12:15 - 12:30   Class/Own Book.

Like we would in class with our class book, spend some time quiet reading or listening to the class book. The teachers have uploaded videos of themselves reading different chapters on Tapestry, so be sure to check :-).

12:30 - 1:30   LUNCH!

1:30 - 2:00   Reading Activity.

We're going to look at scientists who made ground-breaking discoveries, so read the Isaac Newton comprehension and answer the questions.

2 - 2:45pm   PE:

Gym clothes on - get the whole family involved!

Have a look through the different challenges today and form them into a circuit session. Try and push yourself - challenge your body!

You can often do more than you think, you just need the right frame of mind!

Upload a video (it could be a time lapse) of you completing one or more challenges onto Tapestry :-).

2:45 - 3:20pm   French:

Use what you know about directions and the French Alphabet to answer the questions on the worksheet!

Philosophical Question to finish the day!

Yesterday's Q:  What is true happiness?

Miss Martin: Hmm.. I think this is going to look different for everybody. I think true happiness is a situation where you find yourself feeling completely content, safe and are achieving what you want to achieve/ being what you want to be. Everybody's happiness is going to look different and I think that's what makes this question hard to pinpoint but wonderful to think about :-)

Miss Chapman:  I wonder if many actually experience true happiness. To me that describes when there are no worries, anxieties or fears only happiness (positive emotions). All the three I described are innate to humans as they are emotions - some feel these more than others. Although it may be a small worry, anxiety or fear - having them surely means you aren't truly happy? On the other hand, despite having these emotions so long as we can regulate/control our response I suppose one could be truly happy.

Mrs. Hudson: I agree with Miss Chapman and Miss Martin. I think we need to appreciate all our happy times. I think the Lockdown experience has made us appreciate everyday happiness, such as hearing the birds singing, doing fun things with our immediate families and appreciate our friends and classmates. I think we should think about what makes us happy each day. So what has made you happy today? For me it was having porridge with cinnamon- you see the little things. :)

Today's Question:   Can we have happiness without sadness?

Spend some time during dinner or at some point in the evening, discussing this with the other people at home! We're sure there will be some interesting responses :-)
