Hello Year 5! *virtual hand shake and a big grin!*

We hope you had a lovely, sunny Easter Holidays and managed to eat lots of chocolate (we definitely did!). The weather was glorious, so we hope you could enjoy a walk in the park and all the beautiful sounds of Spring, which seem to be more noticeable now that there are not so many cars or planes around. 

This term we will be starting our new topic: What if trees didn't exist? This will fit in beautifully with World Earth Day next week and Forest School, which we hope you will enjoy! 

Our new class read will be : The Wilderness War by Julia Green, which we will be starting to look at in Week 3 (27th April).

So, let's get going! 

Listed below is our suggested timetable for the day. Remember, you can adapt and edit the times you do these tasks to suit the timetable you have at home :-). 

PLEASE NOTE: All documents/activities attached, should be able to be completed without being printed! It is up to you if you want to print any supporting resources. We will be sure to say if the activity we have provided will work best if printed (we want to save your ink!!).

 Word of the Day:  Mammal 

Like you would in school, look up what this word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always apply!). 

09:00 - 09:30: Reading. 

Read your book for 15 mins or more.  

Share with someone at home about what has happened so far or what new information you have learnt.  

• If you’re reading a fiction book, draw a story mountain to show what is happening in the plot. 

• If you’re reading non-fiction, draw a ‘spider diagram’ to show how the text is organised.

09:30 - 10:30: Maths. 

We're going to do some recapping - specifically on percentages today! (I'm sure you're 100% chuffed about that!)

To start with, work through the warm-up on Maths - Warm-Up Task & Challenge.

Watch the video & work through the activities given on the Maths - Main Task Sheet. You can complete the answers straight into your books! 

• Fancy a challenge? Look at the Challenge task! 
• Use the answers to self-assess if you have time. If you made mistakes - where and why?
• Use the resources FDP - Equivalent Display Poster and FDP - Equivalent Number Line (These may be worth printing to have to hand!). 

10:30 - 10:45: Break. 

Have a snack and try to get some fresh air if possible.

This week for PE we will be working on our jumping. How far can you jump? Put a line (a piece of string, ribbon etc) on the floor. Put both feet on the string? How far can you jump? Do three jumps. Measure each one. Keep a record for the week. Can you get further? 

10:45 - 11:15: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar. 

Look at the Paper Pack you were given before Easter! 

Complete the Week 3 Comprehension ‘Secrets’: ‘Word Level’.

11:15 - 12:15: English. 

Look at the Paper Pack you were given before Easter! 

Complete the Week 3 Comprehension ‘Secrets’: ‘Text Level’ and ‘Sentence Level’.

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch.

1:15 - 1:30: Quiet Reading. 

Like we do in class with our Class Book, take a moment to do some quiet reading to yourself. 

1:30 - 3:00: Introducing new Enquiry Topic: 

Our new enquiry is What if Trees Didn’t Exist?  

Write this in the centre of your page and brainstorm any ideas you can think of to answer this question. 

Look at the Eye Spy Sheet (this would be worth printing!) (Learning resources) - if you can go on a walk to find the different trees.  

Collect some leaves, if possible, for each one.

If not, create a leaf picture. Use one of the leaf shapes to repeat in a pattern. 

If you can't find leaves, copy the shapes from the eye-spy sheet to make a repeating pattern to create your own fabric or wallpaper design. 

William Morris, the famous Victorian artist used leaves for inspiration in his art. You find have seen some of these designs on fabric or wallpaper. Look the examples below to inspire your own wallpaper or fabric design.

Well done everyone! We are going to continue providing a philosophical question for you to ponder on at the end of each day! It might be worth writing these down and discussing with your whole family at dinner or lunch. If you are face timing/ skyping friends and family, why not ask their views too?! They are just some funny little thoughts to get your brains working and everyone interacting.

It will be interesting to hear what you think. 

Here we go: Would an elephant make a good pet? Why or why not? Do your parents agree? Why or why not? 

Last term's discussion point: 

If you dig up buried treasure, is it yours?  

Mrs. Hudson: I feel that I suppose what type of treasure it is. Surely if it was an ancient relic, that would inform us about history, then it should go in to a museum for everyone to enjoy? Also doesn't it depend on who the land belongs to? 

Miss Martin: I think it also depends on what type of 'treasure' you dig up... For example, if I found it on someone else's land, wouldn't it belong to them?! Pirates, on the other hand, most of them are seeking treasure and they keep it to themselves even when they know it's not theirs! So is it morally right to keep it, no matter what it is?
