Hello Year 5! *virtual hand shake - with some jumping up and down (like the Adamu tribe do in Kenya)
We hope you enjoyed Forest School yesterday. We have been keeping a beady eye on our seedlings we have been growing. We have now made, from cut up plastic bottles, slug protecting collars to go around our tender beans and peas. Fingers crossed everyone! We hope you are enjoying the Wilderness War too. When we have read it, we have imagined you lovely Year 5s as the characters. We are going to move through this more quickly now, as we near the end of our topic: What if trees didn't exist?
Word of the Day: Stewardship
Like you would in school, look up what this word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always apply!).
09:00 - 09:30: Reading.
Read your book for 15 mins or more.
Create your own 'Natural Green' or 'Talking Turkeys' poem (you could change this to 'Be kind to your Grandma, brother, mother etc. this lockdown' and create your own parody! Try to keep to the same rhythm...)
09:30 - 10:30: Maths.
Warm-Up: Complete the Daily 10 Challenge. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10
Level 5 → Multiplication → Mixed Tables: Up to x12.
Today, we're continuing with Perimeter and Area, but this time looking at irregular shapes! Ooooo...
Work through 'Thursday 14th May - Maths Task Sheet'.
10:30 - 10:45: Break.
Running: How fast can you run? In your garden or hall, see how many lengths of the space you can run in 5 minutes. Can you do more everyday? Keep a log!
10:45 - 11:15: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar.
Spend 15mins on Lexia or Spellzone if you have an account - how great if we could hand out more certificates?
Look at the Flipchart PDF Grammar - Verbs with Suffixes. Look through the slides for 'Thursday 14th May'. Work through the Brain Warm-Up activity and choose the right suffix. Then, sort the words into the table.
11:15 - 12:15: English.
Watch the video below and read the top tips on how to write a discussion text.

Layout:
(Feel free to add any more paragraphs or detail. The plan above is only a guide).
There is a plan added in the Learning Resources, which you can use if you wish.
Remember: a plan is only keywords and ideas. You don't need to write the whole balanced argument yet.
12:15 - 1:15: Lunch.
Be sure to have something to eat and try to get some fresh air!
1:15 - 1:30: Quiet Reading.
Go on to the Wilderness War section of the website. Listen to Chapter 16 and 17 as Mrs Hudson reads it. Have you spotted Humphrey?
1:30 - 3:00: Geography: Habitat (Biomes) and Environmental Issues.
Look at the Geography - Lesson 2 in the resources.
Well done everyone! We are continuing with the philosophical questions! They are just some funny little thoughts to get your brains working and everyone interacting (save your points for lunchtime or dinnertime or FaceTime - get your family involved!).
It will be interesting to hear what you think! :)
Here we go:
What is friendship? Do your parents agree? Why or why not?
Yesterday's question: What is so great about the world anyway?
Mrs. Hudson: In this time of of quiet and staying at home, it has been wonderful for me to marvel at the natural world. I really enjoyed April, as we had gorgeous weather and were really able to focus on the seasons changing. The colours of the bluebells and leaves was a sight to behold.
Miss. Martin: Scientifically, we're the only planet with life on (that we know of...) so that's pretty spectacular in itself... Personally, there are so many wonderful things, both that humans have created or ones that were created naturally. Our world is awesome! This is such a big question... it's hard to narrow down!
Have a great evening, Year 5! We look forward to seeing any ideas or work that you produced from today!
Log in on Friday for some more exciting learning!
