Hello Year 5 or 'নমস্কার'  (nomoskar) as they say in Bangladesh!

We hope you had a fabulous weekend! This week, we are moving our greetings to Asia! We are also going to be rounding off our Ancient Egyptian topic over the next two weeks, as you combine all your amazing knowledge about the topic and start to create your own Ancient Egyptian story. We can't wait to read these! 

Today's book recommendation comes from: Theo Ayling! 'The Person Controller!' by David Baddiel! 

 "Fred & Ellie are twins. But not identical (because that's impossible for a boy and a girl). They do like all the same things, though. Especially video games. Which they are very good at. They aren't good, however, at much else - like, for example, football, or dealing with the school bullies.

Then, they meet the Mystery Man, who sends them a video game controller, which doesn't look like any other controller they've ever seen. And it doesn't control any of their usual games. When the twins find out what it does control, though, it seems like the answer to all their problems. And the key to all their wildest dreams. At least it seems like that... 

Word of the Day:  Puberty 

Look up what the word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always count!). 

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read for 15mins or to the end of the next chapter in your book. 

Read the Camels Comprehension and answer the questions. 

09:30 - 10:30: We are continuing with our Measurement topic this week! 

Imperial Units! 

Have a go at the warm-up, spending 10 minutes on TT Rockstars! 

Work through Monday 6th July - Maths Task Sheet. Have you heard of 'imperial' measurement before? Sounds quite historic! 

10:30 - 10:45: Break/ Snack/ Exercise. 

Sports Day Practice: Balancing a packet of crisps, sweeties or a book on your head.

Use one of these things and practice balancing them on your head. Try going in a straight line first. Go as far as you can without dropping the object. 

10:45 - 11:15: SPaG. Revision! 

Have a go at Summer-Themed SPaG Activities! There are a range of different activities, revolving around grammar work! Use the information in the question they have given you, to guide you in answering. 

11:15 - 12:15: English/Writing. Opinions and Quotes!  

Imagine you are interviewing Howard Carter, Lord Carnarvon or the water carrier, from the book 'I Was There', at the tomb! What questions would you ask them?

• Create 3 questions for each. 
• Ask your mum, dad or friend if it is okay to call them to give you their answers. You can answer their questions too. 
• Write up what you have found out using 'Direct Speech': 
  • Capital letters;
  • inverted commas;
  • commas before the 'said' word;
  • a range of speech words!

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch/Exercise. 

Try to get some fresh air if it is safe and appropriate to do so.

1:15- 1.30: Quiet Reading Time: 'I was There'

Listen to Chapter 5 of I Was There. This book tells the story of the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb, by a boy who was the water carrier. So it gives you a different perspective on this.  Click on our remote audio book page. We will be using this book later on in the term. 

1:30 - 2:45: Enquiry: History! Compare the Mayans and the Ancient Egyptians!  

Think back to our work on the Mayans and think about our work on the Ancient Egyptians. What was the same and what was different about the 2 cultures? 

• Divide your page in two, by drawing a line in the middle. Write 'Same' on 1 side and 'Different' on the other. 
• Brainstorm your own ideas first, then look at the website for more information.

2:45 - 3:00: Philosophical Question. 

Today's Question: What is the point of music? 

Spend some time during dinner or at some point in the evening, discussing this with the other people at home! We're sure there will be some interesting responses.

Yesterday's Q: Is it easier to learn at home or school? Why? 

Mrs. Hudson:  You have completed some amazing work over the past 3 months+. Your parents have been fantastic too, encouraging you and helping you to stay on track. However, I do think it is easier to learn at school, as the teachers can give you continual feedback and also you can discuss your ideas with your friends. 

Miss Martin: I think there's pros and cons to both! You've done an awesome job of learning at home for such a prolonged period of time and the adults at home have done a fabulous jobs of encouraging you and keeping you motivated! I think with school, we're able to constantly feedback on what you've done and you have the chance to learn alongside your friends also!
