Hello Year 5! *virtual hand shake - with a clapping of hands (like they sometimes do in Zimbabwe and Mozambique)*

We hope you had a lovely weekend. This week is a short week, as we have a Bank Holiday on Friday, when we are celebrating the end of World War II with the 75th VE Day Celebrations. So on Thursday, we will start to prepare for this. You can cheer up your neighbours by decorating your houses with bunting and flags. There is a VE day section on the main website, which we want you to look at, especially Mr. Carradine's brilliant sing-a-long section. At 9pm on Friday, the whole country will join in a rendition of We'll Meet Again, which will seem even more poignant as we think about the words.

Listed below is our suggested timetable for the day. Remember, you can adapt and edit the times you do these tasks to suit the timetable you have at home :-).

As mentioned before, we have aimed to choose activities which can be completed straight into books without printing - to help save ink - but if you feel printing would be helpful, that is entirely up to you! :-)

 Word of the Day:  Pollination

Like you would in school, look up what this word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always apply!).

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read your book for 15 mins or more.

Complete one of the attached Comprehension Cards (Apricot 3 - Mild and Sapphire 8 - Spicy). Complete the multiple choice questions and then check your answers, using the given sheet.

09:30 - 10:30: Maths.

Warm-Up: Spend some time on TT Rockstars! https://play.ttrockstars.com/auth/school/student

Which class will get the most logins?!

This week, we are starting a new topic: Perimeter and Area (some measurement!).

Work through 'Monday 4th May - Maths Teaching Sheets'.

Need an extra challenge? Come up with as many ways as possible to make a shape that has a perimeter of 54cm!

10:30 - 10:45: Break.

Have a snack and try to get some fresh air if possible.

It takes the average person about 3.5-4 minutes to run 800m. Can you run for this length of time?

10:45 - 11:15: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar.

Spend 15mins on Lexia or Spellzone if you have an account - how great if we could hand out more certificates?!

Complete the Vocabulary Ninja Activity: the 'SPaG Spotter' activity!

TIP: An 'article' may also be recognised as a 'determiner' (words like 'a', 'an' and 'the').

11:15 - 12:15: English.

Imagine you are interviewing Noah and his friends about the Wilderness.

  • What questions would you ask him? How would he/they answer?
  • Create questions and answers about his feelings regarding the Wilderness, the games and dens he's created and his reaction to the site being sold. You could maybe FaceTime a friend and role-play your ideas (one person being Noah and his friend and the other being the interviewer).

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch.

Be sure to have something to eat and try to get some fresh air!

1:15 - 1:30: Quiet Reading.

Go on to the Wilderness War section of the website. Follow Chapter 6 as Miss Martin reads it.

1:30 - 3:00: Science-Focused Enquiry:

Music practice for VE Day: practice the VE songs with Mr. Carradine!-

Now, back to Science!

Watch the video on plants: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zgssgk7/articles/zyv3jty

  • Draw the life-cycle of a plant!
  • On your exercise or from your garden, collect a plant/weed or flower head. A dandellion is brilliant for this. Take it apart. Can you find the separate parts - the seeds, flower etc?
  • Using the Anatomical Picture of a Flower sheet, create your own botanical drawing of a flower or match the words to the diagram of a flowerhead.

Well done everyone! We are continuing with the philosophical questions! They are just some funny little thoughts to get your brains working and everyone interacting (save your points for lunchtime or dinnertime or FaceTime - get your family involved!).

It will be interesting to hear what you think! :)

Here we go:

Should we treat animals the same way as humans?  Do your parents agree? Why or why not?

Yesterday's question:

Could a cube be a ball? How and why?

Mrs. Hudson:  You could play catch with a cube, but isn't a ball a sphere?

Miss. Martin: Maybe you could have 'cube-shaped' ball... Would that work? Like an inflatable cube?

Have a great evening, Year 5! We look forward to seeing any ideas or work that you produced from today!

Log in on Tuesday for some more exciting learning!
