Good morning Year 6!

We hope that you all had a lovely weekend! Last week was very busy with the Queen’s birthday, Shakespeare’s birthday, Earth Day, St George’s Day and the start of Ramadan – this week seems much quieter, thank goodness! As always, we are looking forward to speaking with you all this week on the phone. Remember, if there is anything that you are unsure about, please let us know when we speak to you. J Right, off we go!

8.50am Word of the Day tantalising

Challenges:

- Find out what it means and write the definition in your own words!
- What is its word class? (Is it a noun, verb, adjective?)

- Can you find any synonyms or antonyms? (There are some excellent synonyms!)

- Can you use it in an interesting sentence?

Are you able to use it, appropriately, when you are speaking or in any of your writing opportunities?

Finally, try to find the root of the word – its origin – again, it isn’t Latin!

9am PE

It is great that so many of you are still following Joe Wicks! He set a challenge last week to see how much we have all improved by doing a certain number of exercises in one minute – how are you getting on?

If you have access to an outdoor space, try to work on your ‘standing jump’. How far do you think you can jump? Put a line (a piece of string / ribbon) on the ground, and place your toes on the string. Pump your arms and flex your knees then jump as far as you can. Measure it. Do it three times and repeat each day. How much further are you able to jump by the end of the week? If you are in contact with a friend, have a competition!

9.30am Independent reading

If your family get a newspaper, try reading some articles about the current Covid 19 situation. It is good to be informed – and you will find the items on news programmes far more interesting if you have some background knowledge.

10am Comprehension

Barack Obama

Again, time to grab your original learning pack for your new comprehension task. Read the two page information text and make a note of any words or phrases that you don’t understand. Write them in your book and look them up. (Turmoil – I’m sure that that was one of 6PO’s WOD – can you remember what it means?)

10.15am Maths - A new week and a new topic. We are looking at angles in triangles this week.

11am Take a Break

11.20am Spelling

Use a dictionary to collect ten words beginning with ‘bi’, e.g. bicycle.

Show how you can use a prefix to work out what a word means.

11.30 Writing

Photography with Tom Miles

We've loved hearing the positive feedback you've had about this so far: we think Tom is brilliant and we've already had a go at this week's challenge.  Hopefully, you'll have as much fun as we did.

Philosophical Question of the Day

Is an emotional person more or less likely to be a good person?

Most of us have an immediate response to these questions, but who is swayed when they discuss them with the rest of the family?  Or, who manages to persuade others to see things from their point of view?   We love discussing these with our families over dinner.  As always, there's never one answer ...
