Hello Year 5! *virtual hand shake - with a marshmallow cloud!*

We hope you had a great weekend! It was certainly wonderful to catch up with everyone and hear what you have been doing during or outside of school time. We are so glad lots of you are keeping in contact with each other through Zoom or other platforms. Remember our safer internet work and continue to use the web thoughtfully and responsibly! smiley

This week is an opportunity for some more exciting learning with the Queen's 94th birthday, World Earth Day and St. George's day. So we hope you'll enjoy the activities we have planned.

Listed below is our suggested timetable for the day. Remember, you can adapt and edit the times you do these tasks to suit the timetable you have at home :-).

As mentioned before, we have aimed to choose activities which can be completed straight into books without printing - to help save ink - but if you feel printing would be helpful, that is entirely up to you! :-)

 Word of the Day:  indigenous

Like you would in school, look up what this word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always apply!).

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read your book for 15 mins or more.

Complete the Comprehension Card - Grandma's Socks (harder) or Spruce Goose (easier) in the resources.

09:30 - 10:30: Maths.

This week, we are now just focusing on decimals! In particular, we're using our knowledge of number bonds to 10, 100 and 1000 and thinking how these can be applied to decimal questions.

Warm-Up: Complete the following addition & subtraction sums. How many can you complete in 5 mins?

  • (0.3 + 0.2)   (0.2 + 0.1 + 0.2)   (0.28 + 0.32)   (0.42 + 0.033)   (0.402 + 0.03)

  • (0.9 - 0.2)   (1 – 0.2 - 0.1)   (0.09 - 0.03)   (0.42 - 0.3)    (0.28 - 0.05)

Remember to line up place value columns & don’t forget place holders!

Home Learning – Year 5 – Summer Term Week 1 (Lesson 3 – Complements to 1). Start the video from 0.28 and watch until 02:58.

Work through Questions 1 - 3 on the White Rose Sheet - Complements to 1.

Challenge:  Choose which sheet to work through & try some verbal fluency questions.

10:30 - 10:45: Break.

Have a snack and try to get some fresh air if possible.

How far did you jump last week? This week you are going to try a running jump

Like last week, put a line (a piece of string, ribbon etc) on the floor, as your starting point. Make sure there is nothing in the way and you can run or take 3 steps back easily. How far can you jump? Remember to use your arms to power forward too. Measure 3 jumps. Keep a record for the week. Can you get further?

10:45 - 11:15: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar.

Spend 15mins on Lexia or Spellzone if you have an account - how great if we could hand out more certificates?!

Grab your paper pack from before Easter! Complete 'Comprehension Sheet: Week 4 - Bats', 'Word level'.

11:15 - 12:15: English.

Complete 'Comprehension Sheet: Week 4 - Bats: 'Text and Sentence' level.

As you read through the sheet, think about how this non - fiction text is laid out. Does it have a title? Questions for the subheadings? Detailed paragraphs, photos and captions?

What other non-fiction texts do you know of/ have to hand that are organised and presented in a similar way?

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch.

Be sure to have something to eat and try to get some fresh air!

1:15 - 1:30: Quiet Reading.

Like we do in class with our Class Book, take a moment to do some quiet reading to yourself.

1:30 - 3:00: Science-Focused Enquiry

You should now be experts from Friday's lesson of sorting animals into groups - mammals, birds, amphibians etc.  This week we will looking at the different life-cycles of the groups. So today, we are going to start with mammals and a sub-group you will know well, mammals.

So look at the websites below and play the games!

Then, create your own life-cycle of a human.

Use these words in your labelled diagram; baby, toddler, child, adolescent, adult and old age.

Well done everyone! We are continuing with the philosophical questions! They are just some funny little thoughts to get your brains working and everyone interacting (save your points for lunchtime or dinnertime or FaceTime - get your family involved!).

It will be interesting to hear what you think! :)

Here we go:

If you could make a new law, what would it be? Do your parents agree? Why or why not?

Yesterday's discussion point:

Can anything be true or false at the same time?

Mrs. Hudson: OOOOOh this set me thinking! Well, I think it depends on a person's beliefs. For example, if you have strong religious beliefs, you will feel that the existence of God is true or real, whilst atheists will believe the opposite.

Miss Martin: This one has me completely baffled! The way our world works (and with lots of the science we know) doesn't really allow anything factual to be true and false at the same time... but when it comes to opinion, that's another matter entirely! 'Blue is the best colour'.. is something I consider to be true... but it's my opinion!

Have a great evening, Year 5! We look forward to speaking to some of you today and throughout the week :-)

Log in on Tuesday for some more exciting learning!
