Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling

What’s the difference between direct and indirect speech?

Direct: the exact words someone says in inverted commas, e.g. “Let’s make soup for lunch,” suggested Mrs Pullin.

Indirect: reporting on what someone has said (no inverted commas), e.g. Mrs Pullin suggested making soup for lunch.

Rewrite these three examples of direct speech as indirect speech:

  1. “I’ve already made sandwiches,” Mrs O’Brien told her.
  2. “We could have soup and sandwiches?” suggested Mrs Kempe.
  3. “We’ll save whatever we don’t eat for tomorrow,” agreed Mrs Wright.
