Hello Year 5 or 'Hej!' as they say in Sweden!

We hope you had a lovely weekend. This week our focus is on the Ancient Egyptian Gods and pyramids, which we hope you will enjoy. Don't forget to use any information books you have at home to help you investigate these areas more. 

We know you have all been enjoying other activities during lockdown, such as camping, walking, exploring nature, paddling pools, drawing, baking and, of course, reading. We have read and enjoyed lots of books too. So everyday we would like to give a book recommendation from one of your Year 5 classmates. Please do let us know about any recommendations you have via the school office. Our first is from James Gunning:

 Word of the Day:  Mangled 

Look up what the word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always count!). 

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read your book for 15mins or more.

As you will be doing a comprehension later, read this website instead:

09:30 - 10:30: Mathematics.

We're continuing with fractions this week. We have been so impressed to hear the level of engagement and hard work that has gone into your mathematical learning! Especially when this is a challenging topic! Huge thumbs up! 

We're looking at finding Fractions of an Amount today (& you'll be doing this tomorrow!). 

• To warm-up, spend 10 minutes on TT Rockstars and practice those tables! 

Then, work through 'Monday 15th June - Maths Task Sheet.' 

10:30 - 10:45: Break/ Snack/ Exercise. 

Have a snack and try to get some fresh air if possible.

10:45 - 11:15: SPaG. 

Have a go at the Excellent Etymology Match-Up Game! Etymology is all about where words come from... Remember our book in class about the origins of words? Work through the sheet and see how well you do! Share your new-found knowledge with someone at home! 

Remember to have a go at Lexia/ Spellzone! 

11:15 - 12:15: English/Writing. 

This week, we will be focusing on Egyptian Religion and specifically their Gods! 

Read: The Story of Osiris. 

• Answer the 'Text', 'Sentence' and 'Word' sections. 

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch/Exercise. 

Try to get some fresh air if it is safe and appropriate to do so.

1:15- 1.30: Quiet Reading Time:

Listen to Chapter 12 of the Time Travelling Cat. A mysterious tale that will take you back to Ancient Egypt. Click on our remote audio book page. We will be using this book later on in the term. 

1:30 - 2:45: Enquiry: History Focus!

Then, use the information to complete the Egyptian God Fact File sheet.

• Copy or cut out the pictures to help you. 
• Write a paragraph about each of them describing: 
  • What they looked like! 
  • What they were the God or Goddess of...
  • Other interesting/useful information about them!

2:45 - 3:00: Philosophical Question. 

Today's Question: What is a positive (a good thing), a minus (a bad thing) and an interesting point about a chocolate tea-pot? 

Spend some time during dinner or at some point in the evening, discussing this with the other people at home! We're sure there will be some interesting responses.

Yesterday's Q: What is a positive (a good thing), a minus (a bad thing) and an interesting point about school? 

Mrs. Hudson: Primarily, the good thing is it is a social place to meet friends and for teachers to move your learning on. A negative is that sometimes we have to cover so many subjects in a short amount of time. An interesting fact is that in the Victorian Times there were 60 pupils in a class and boys and girls were segregated. 

Miss Martin: I think one of the great things about school is being able to meet new people & perhaps be introduced to topics/learning you may never have thought to look at yourself. I think a downside is there is so much to do, and not enough of the time we would like to do everything in! Lastly... Apparently, in 2016, the largest school in the world had about 52, 000 pupils and 2,500 teachers? (Blimey, that's A LOT of names to try and remember!).
