Hello Year 5 or 'tena yistilign' as they say in Ethopia!

We can't express in words how wonderful it was to see you yesterday . You all looked full of beans and smiles. We hope you enjoyed it too! 

Today, we are starting our learning about puberty. We will be discussing how our bodies change over the next 3 weeks. Puberty happens to us all! It is part of growing up and being human, but is slightly different for boys and girls. Look at the information and discuss it with your parents. You will revisit this in Year 6 too. 

Remember the video, which shows actual film footage from the excavation, that they have made in to colour.

It is about an hour long, but a great way to spend time if it is raining today. Also, you could split it in to sections. Enjoy!

Word of the Day:  Alabaster 

Look up what the word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always count!). 

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read for 15mins or to the end of the next chapter in your book. 

Now, complete the 60-Second Reading Comprehension 'Friendly Felines!' - think about the types of question and what each 'dog' is asking you to focus on! 

09:30 - 10:30: Mathematics. Catch-Up Session OR Challenge Session! 

Work through Friday 3rd July - Maths Task Sheet. Use this opportunity to revise and go over any areas you are unsure of. Or, if you're already feeling confident, work on the Family Maths Challenge! 

10:30 - 10:45: Break/ Snack/ Exercise. 

Have a snack and try to get some fresh air if possible. 

Sports Day Practice!  Get a spoon (make sure your adults know!). Wrap some scrap paper into a thick ball, with some tape! 

• Can you walk with one hand behind your back, whilst the other holds the egg (paper) and spoon out in front, down the garden or around every room in the house? 
• Can you try running? Don't drop the egg! 

10:45 - 11:15: SPaG. Revision! 

Complete the Correct the Spelling! sheet. The spellings are words from the Year 5/6 spelling list. Check your answers when you are done! 

• Once you have done that, choose 5 spellings from the Year 5/6 spelling list which you find particular hard to spell... Use the Visual Spelling Strategies sheet to help you learn them! 

11:15 - 12:15: English/Writing.  Write a telegram! 

Look at the section from our picture book: The Story of Tutankhamun 'The Discovery', which will give you more information! 

A telegram was used to send messages overseas in the past, long before text messages or emails! A short, written message. 

Anyway, imagine you are Howard Carter again, but this time send a telegram to the man who has funded your for the Boy King, Lord Carnarvon! 

• Write telling him how you felt about discovering and entering King Tutankhamun's tomb and describe the amazing treasures inside! Really think how you can combine all the information and descriptions you have created this week.. 

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch/Exercise. 

Try to get some fresh air if it is safe and appropriate to do so.

1:15- 1.30: Quiet Reading Time: 'I was There'

Listen to Chapter 4 of I Was There. This book tells the story of the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb, by a boy who was the water carrier. So it gives you a different perspective on this.  Click on our remote audio book page. We will be using this book later on in the term. 

1:30 - 2:45: Enquiry: PSHE!  Puberty! Our Changing Bodies! 

Puberty is something that happens to us all! Everyone! It is a part of us growing up and becoming adults. Please do discuss this with your mums and dads. It's natural. Let's demystify it! 

1. Brainstorm all the words you can think of to describe parts of your bodies. You may have some funny ones that are used within your family! That's fine, we all do! 

For the purpose of this lesson, we will refer to key parts of your bodies. These are the words we will use: pubic, vagina, penis and breast. 

1. Now, draw 2 children - male and female. Label how they will change. 
2. Look at the PowerPoint attached in the learning resources. Tick off the changes that you identified in your two pictures.
   1. How many did you get right? 
   2. Were there any changes you were surprised by? Why Discuss these with your parents. We will come back to this next week! 

2:45 - 3:00: Philosophical Question. 

Today's Question: Is it easier to learn at home or school? Why? 

Spend some time during dinner or at some point in the evening, discussing this with the other people at home! We're sure there will be some interesting responses.

Yesterday's Q: Do you think robots will eventually take over the world? Why or why not? 

Mrs. Hudson: In the current Covid-19 world, I can see AI (Artificial Intelligence) being used more and more, especially for operations. Much work is being completed on this at present. Certainly in the last 50 years we have become more reliant on technology, however I think over the past few months we have realised how important people are and face to face contact is. 

Miss Martin: Since lockdown, it has shown us that technology has been a huge blessing in keeping us connected and allowing us to continue our work whilst away from the workplace. I also know that Artificial Intelligence is advancing more and more every year, but creativity and human nature can't be replicated by humans yet... so, I don't think they will take over the world!
