Why do people say: Money doesn't grow on trees?

Challenges:   

  • Find out what it means and write the definition in your own words!   

  •  What is its word class?   

  • How many syllables does it have (clap each syllable to help you)? 

  •  Make a list of synonyms and antonyms   

  •  Can you use it in an interesting sentence?  

  • Are you able to use it, appropriately, when you are speaking or in any of your writing opportunities?

Time for writing!  

Your steps to success: 

  1. I will re-read my plan. 
  2. I will say out loud or in my head my plan to a partner.  
  3. Before writing, I will read the success criteria and ask if I do not understand something. 
  4. As I am writing, I will refer to my plan.  
  5. After writing a paragraph, I will proof read it.

Organise sentences to include the taught vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.  

  • Full stops, capital letters, question marks, exclamation marks, commas  

  • Pronouns and nouns  

  • Fronted adverbials 

  • Expanded noun phrases  

(adjective + noun + prepositional phrase) 

 

Begin to develop a simple awareness of other forms of speech e.g. reported speech and dialogue.  

  • Direct speech 

“I bid you farewell,” said Bob. 

  • Indirect speech 

From mars, Bob bid farewell to 4NC. 

 

Use adverbs and conjunctions to link ideas within paragraphs. 

  • Adverbs tell us when something is done.  

  • Conjunctions are used to link ideas within a sentence.  

  • Prepositions tell you where something is done or happens.  

 

Use deliberate language choices to add interest, detail and to help with understanding.  

  • Adjectives 

  • Similes 

  • Metaphors  

  • Alliteration  

  • Topic vocabulary  

 

Develop their proof-reading skills, beginning to check over the text in finer detail to detect errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar.  

  • Have you noticed any missing punctuation?  

Edit with a different colour (if possible) 

 

Competently use apostrophes to: 

  • Indicate ownership.  

  • Examples:
