Morning Year 6!

What a beautiful day yesterday! I hope that you managed to get out and stretch your legs.

We three Year 6 teachers talk every day - we are 'video calling' experts now - and we are so impressed at the positive attitude that you are all showing towards your work and being in 'lockdown'. From the conversations which we have had with yourselves and your parents, we are so impressed at the maturity and good humour that you are showing. We are very proud of our Year 6 pupils and are even more keen for school to resume - at some point - before the summer holidays start. Fingers (and toes) crossed!

Now, the excitement for today starts with...

8.50am Word of the Day - flustered

Challenges:  

- Find out what it means and write the definition in your own words!  
- What is its word class? (Is it a noun, verb, adjective?)  

- How many syllables does it have (clap each syllable to help you)?

- Can you find any synonyms or antonyms?

- Can you use it in an interesting sentence? 

Are you able to use it, appropriately, when you are speaking or in any of your writing opportunities?  

 Finally, try to find the root of the word – its origin – for once it isn’t Latin!

9am PE

9.30am Independent Reading

Carry on reading your book, or, if you found out information about Ellis Island, carry on reading up about that. Try to make sure that you are having a mixed ‘diet’ of fiction and non-fiction.

10am Comprehension

You must be getting to know this text well by now. Today it is time for 'Multiple Choice' and 'Sequencing'!

10.15am Maths 

Our last day for looking at ratio. Plenty for you to get cracking on with. If you want to put ratios into action, you could try a baking recipe (if you have the ingredients) and try changing the number of cakes or biscuits so you have to change the weights of the ingredients. Could be tricky if it includes eggs but we'll leave that for you to decide on. We're just sad we can't be there to sample them all. 

e.g. If the recipe is for 6 cakes trying halving the recipe or doubling it. 

11.20am Grammar / Spelling

Add different endings to these roots to make new words, e.g. ‘hard’ can make ‘hardness’, ‘hardened’, ‘hardy’.

Underline the roots and circle the suffixes.

Finally, choose one word from each group and put it into a sentence to show its meaning.

1.30pm Science or French

This afternoon we'd like you to recap your understanding of the circulatory system: learning from Term 3.  How much can you remember?  This is a practical activity to build a model of the heart as a pump.  You'll need a few bits and pieces that, hopefully, you've got available at home.  If not, you obviously can't just pop out to get them and might have to wait until someone does the weekly shop.  If that's the case, why not do next week's French learning this afternoon and then the Science next week when you have the necessary equipment.  If you run into problems sourcing what you need, let us know and we'll do what we can to help you out.
