Friday 1st May 2020

Good morning year 6 and the end of a rather soggy week.

I think we experienced pretty much every type of weather yesterday. Thankfully it looks rather better for the weekend so we should be able to get outside for some fresh air and exercise. What is on the agenda this weekend? A long walk along the river, a bike ride, feeding the ducks? It has been lovely finding out what walks and bike rides you have been getting up to. Don't forget to take your camera if you do go out; the gallery is looking pretty smart. We think Tate Modern will be calling us soon!smileyHave a wonderful weekend and stay safe heart

8.50am Word of the Day - gathering

Challenges:

- Find out what it means and write the definition in your own words!
- What is its word class? (Is it a noun, verb, adjective?)

- How many syllables does it have (clap each syllable to help you)?

- Can you find any synonyms or antonyms?

- Can you use it in an interesting sentence?

Are you able to use it, appropriately, when you are speaking or in any of your writing opportunities?

Finally, try to find the root of the word!

(The word is topical at the moment – as a noun, it is something we are not allowed to do!)

9.00am PE

Exercise outdoors has been a little tricky this week, hasn't it?  Well done if you've managed to dodge the showers.  If you've got any balloons left after making your model of the heart as a pump, blow one up and get as many family members as you can involved in a game of balloon volleyball.

9.30am Independent reading

Find somewhere quiet to read your book. Remember, if you have finished a good book recently, please write a book review – we’ll see if we can get some recommendations going!

10am Comprehension

Barack Obama

Our last day with him! If you found his story interesting, try to find out more about either him or his wife, Michelle Obama. She was recently voted one of the most influential women in America!

Today we are on ‘Find and Copy’ and ‘Underline or Highlight’.

10.15am Maths

It's challenge day today. There are three challenges for you to get to grips with. Have a look at them all before you make your choice. Do one or all three, the choice is yours.

Break

11.20am     Grammar / Punctuation / Spelling

To celebrate it being May 1st – and Friday – we are going to have a game.

This is popular in 6PO – it is called ‘STP’.

It is a simple game about word association. It can be played with two or more players.

  • Someone starts the game and chooses a noun, for example, ‘flower’.
  • The next person has to say a noun that links directly to that, for example, ‘leaf’.
  • The next person says a noun that ONLY links to ‘leaf’ – ‘green’.
  • The next person says a noun that links to ‘green’ – ‘car’
  • ‘Car’?  the link could be ‘wheel’…and so on.

The chain can be very long and very interesting – and it can go in unexpected directions!

Rules

No proper nouns, no abstract nouns (emotions) no phrases, no adjectives…

Why is it called STP? NO WORDS BEGINNING WITH S, T OR P!

Try it - it's trickier than it sounds...

11.30am The Arrival

Lunch

Enquiry

More Science today but we want you to think back to Term 1 and the learning we did about classification.  As we've said before, you need to go through the process of retrieving information that you have previously learnt in order for it to stick in the long term memory successfully.  Hopefully this reminder will help to embed the learning a little more securely.

Philosophical Question

Could a cube be a ball?  How?

What do you think?  Can you persuade someone else to agree with you?
