Read and learn all an archaeologist called Howard Carter. Answer the questions on the sheet. It might be helpful to underline key words in the questions to remind you of what to look for.

Refer to your previous planning from Tuesday and sentence starters from Wednesday to help you. Use the Recount Features success criteria in your Lesson Plan to help you keep track of your writing.

Afternoon - Wider Curriculum 

Today marks the beginning of Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival. It shares many similarities with religious festivals around the world: giving thanks, worshipping gods, remembering and sharing hopes for the future, although it is not strictly a religious festival. Chinese New Year celebrates the end of Winter and the arrival of Spring.

Chinese New Year is celebrated around the world but sadly, we are unlikely to see these wonderful celebrations for this year at least. Watch these videos to get a flavour of what celebrations would normally look like.

Below, there are a variety of challenges to choose from. that will help you to think more deeply about aspects of Chinese New Year. You may do one, two or all of them.

Chinese Zodiac

Read the Chinese New Year - Story powerpoint. This story is 4,000 years old! As you read, complete the Animals of the Chinese Zodiac - Traits Chart. Think carefully about the positives and negatives of each animal. Discuss them with someone else.. When you have completed this, write a paragraph explaining which animal you would be and, using the positive traits chart, why you would be that animal.

Fortune Tellers

On the third day of celebrations, Chinese people visit the Temple of Wealth and have their futures told. In other world faiths, believers often use prayer to share their hopes and fears. What do you want your future to look like? Write a paragraph to help answer these questions:

Where will you be living e.g. another country?

What job will you be doing?

What will your house be like?

What hobbies will you enjoy?

What skills will you have?

When you have finished, use the Fortune Teller - Instructions to make your own. Lay a blank piece of paper over the questions/answers (on page 2) so you can write your own.  Now foresee the futures of your family!

Acrostic Poetry

According to the Chinese Zodiac, the year you were born in can influence your personality. Find out which Chinese Zodiac animal is linked to the year of your birth. In what ways do you reflect the qualities of this animal? Use the Chinese Zodiac Guide to help you. If it helps, use a mind map.

Now make an acrostic poem using the animal letters. These poems use each letter of the word as the starting letter of an adjective or phrase. Use each letter of your animal to describe your personality. If you can, do it on a large piece of paper and make it colourful. Finish off by including an illustration of your birth animal.
