Hello Year 5 or 'ສະບາຍດີ (Sa-bai-Dee)' as they say in Loas!

By now, you will have met your new teachers via zoom!laugh We know that they are really excited to meet you face to face and hope you have enjoyed the activities you have done with them! Which object did you choose for your story and how did your scarab beetle turn out? We hope you haven't got too soggy over the past few days and are looking forward to a brighter weekend.

Today's book recommendation comes from: Sophie Tibbals! "Pear Affair" by Judith Eagle!

"When Nell Magnificent's awful Mum and Dad go to Paris on a business trip, Nell surprises them by tagging along. But Nell is not planning on hanging around. The city is hiding someone very dear to her! Someone Nell affectionately calls Pear. Someone Nell is determined to find......"

Word of the Day:  Adolescent

Look up what the word means, what word group it belongs to, place it accurately into a sentence and work out what prefixes/ suffixes could be added (remember this last one doesn't always count!).

09:00 - 09:30: Reading.

Read for 15mins or to the end of the next chapter in your book.

Now, complete the 60 Second Reading Comprehension 'Mummy Recipe!'think about the types of questions and what each 'dog' focuses on.

09:30 - 10:30: Mathematics.

Catch-Up Session or Challenge Session!

Work through Friday 10th July - Maths Task Sheet. Use this opportunity to revise and go over any areas you are unsure of. Or, if you're feeling confident, work on the Family Maths Challenge!

10:30 - 10:45: Break/ Snack/ Exercise.

Sports Day Practice: Balancing a packet of crisps, sweeties or a book on your head.

Use one of these things and practice balancing them on your head. Try going in a straight line first. Go as far as you can without dropping the object.

10:45 - 11:15: SPaG. Revision!

Complete the Correct the Spelling! sheet. The spellings are words from the Year 5/6 spelling list.

Check your answers when you are done!

  • Once you have done that, choose 5 spellings from the Year 5/6 spellings list which you find particularly hard to spell... Use the Visual Spelling Strategies sheet to help you learn them!

11:15 - 12:15: English/Writing. The Time-Travelling Cat: A Setting!

Look at the sheet of pictures attached. Which setting will your intrepid time travellers go back to? The Nile, a pyramid, Tutankhamun's tomb or the pharaoh's palace?

  • Choose your setting!
    • Brainstorm ideas, similes, personification, different openers...
    • Write a powerful paragraph about your setting!

Next week, we will use all the information and your ideas to start to write up your own time-travelling story, as you step back in time to Ancient Egypt!

12:15 - 1:15: Lunch/Exercise.

Try to get some fresh air if it is safe and appropriate to do so.

1:15- 1.30: Quiet Reading Time: 'I was There'

Listen to Chapter 9 of I Was There. This book tells the story of the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb, by a boy who was the water carrier. So it gives you a different perspective on this.  Click on our remote audio book page. We will be using this book later on in the term.

1:30 - 2:45: Enquiry: PSHE: Puberty.    Part 2 - Boys & Girls!

This week, with the help of e-books, we are going to look at the specific changes that occur to all children during puberty. There is no set age when this happens, as we are all different! Please don't worry about this, it happens to us all!

Even though there are 2 different e-books, for boys and girls, it is important that you look at both, as you may have a brother, sister or a friend this may be happening to! This will help you understand that these changes may cause them to behave differently. The more we can discuss puberty and changes, the more you will demystify it and realise that it is all part of a human's life cycle!

  • Look at the Boys and Girls' e-books!
  • Fill in the tick sheet in the resources!

2:45 - 3:00: Philosophical Question.

Today's Question: Is Graffiti art? Why or why not?

Spend some time during dinner or at some point in the evening, discussing this with the other people at home! We're sure there will be some interesting responses.

We look forward to hearing about your responses!

Yesterday's Q: What is the point of the Arts (literature, art, music, dance)?

Mrs. Hudson: I think that the arts are vital to our society. So many of you enjoy dance clubs, choirs, drawing or pottery. We discussed these activities as positive to our mental health, like sport they can help you switch off and relax. They can make you think deeper about a subject or make you question something further. One of the great aspects of this Remote Learning has been to see lots of your creations, whether it has been a sculpture (from Lego), a poem or a painting. Thank you for these.

Miss Martin: There are so many different avenues in learning... We each have our strengths and weaknesses... The Arts are a wonderful way to be creative and expressive in other forms than just writing, reading or mathematical equations! They present culture and diversity and that's SO important! I know so many of Year 5 thoroughly enjoy art lessons or being 'hands-on' in an activity which lets your imagination run wild in lots of different ways! The Arts make our society! They shape it :-)

We look forward to hearing your responses! Log in on Monday for more wonderful learning! Have a great weekend.
