Admission Arrangements

General

The total number of children which can be accommodated at Sussex Road School is 450. The classes can vary in size of the year group, but we endeavour to have  a maximum of 30 children per class. Where classes exceed this number it is under direction of the Local Authority and based on the outcome of appeals heard by an independent panel. The admission process for new Reception September intake usually starts each November is completed by KCC.  Casual in-year applications for other year groups are the responsibility of each individual school details.  Application forms for both can be found at http://www.kent.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools/school-places/primary-school-places.

Reception Intake

We welcome all prospective families for our Reception intake to visit the school before making an application, please call the School Office on 01732 352367 to arrange a mutually convenient appointment. Our admissions limit is 60 Reception age children and this number is divided into two classes, which benefit from a highly effective open plan environment.

When Reception children join the school on a rolling intake over the first few weeks of term to gradually introduce them to a full school timetable and enable their teachers to have a full understanding of each child's learning needs. Before your child starts with us the Reception Team will book appointments to visit families at home to explain the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and to reassure you regarding any concerns or questions you may have. When the children begin their schooling in one of our Reception Classes they continue with the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum that would have been started at Playgroup or Nursery.

Casual In Year Admissions

Children who are above the statutory age and are seeking a place in the school may be admitted at any time provided a place exists within the appropriate year group. In Year 1- 6 all children follow the National Curriculum.  You will need to complete and return an in year application form (please see link above ) and return it to the school.  We will consider you application and either make an offer or contact you to ask if you wish to be added to a waiting list.  Please be aware that we have only very limited availability for casual admissions and we hold a considerable waiting list of most year groups.  As places become available they are offered in accordance with the KCC Admission criteria.  Families are able to appeal if they are unsuccessful in gaining a place at the school, however we are legally required to limit our places to 30 children per class in Reception, and Years 1 and 2, and have extremely limited capacity for expansion in other year groups.
